The UK & California:
A ComparativeAnalysis of Fuel CellIndustry Clusters
This thesis examines the emerging Fuel Cell Industry in the UKand California through the lens of Porter’s (1990) work onindustrial clusters and earlier work in the field of economicgeography. This thesis assumes the perspective that empirical andtheoretical treatments of the development of disruptive vehicletechnologies to date, have underplayed the role of spatialagglomeration, which is a neglected aspect of the developmentof these evolving new automotive technology clusters; this thesisexamines the factors that influence the growth of clusters usingPorter’s Diamond model. The development of Fuel Cell Industry clusters is given a widercontext through the imperative of developing cleantransportation solutions to answer the challenges posed byresource shortage and anthropometric climate change.
