many
contemporarystudies,
ail
of
whichhaveattemptedto
examine
variousangles
of
thepossibleconnectionbetweenIbn
Sfni
andmysticism.
These
studies,however,have
not
fullyexplored
Ibn
sIna's
understanding
of
mysticism;
he
isgenerally
seen
astheMostrationalphilosopherwho
ever
lived
and,
therefore,unlikely
to
bave
been
amystic
in
any
sense.
In
response
to
this
claim,
thepresentstudy
aims
toreconsiderIbnsiDa'sconnectionwithmysticism
and
toexaminebis
OWD
perception
of
thistradition.ThisthesisOOtlooks
at
the
variousfactorswhichMaypossiblyhavecontributedtoIbnSIna'smysticaltbought.
Two
of
thesewere
bis
spiritualconsciousness
and
the
ShI'ite
milieu
of
bismes.
The
intellectualtradition
in
whichIbn
s'ka
lived,
and
bisexposuretodifferentaspects
of
Islamicintellectualtradition,wereanotherfactorthatshapedbismysticalthought.
This
thesisalsoattemptstorereadIbn
Sma's
mysticalworksinordertorevealbismethodologicalperspective
on
mysticism.IbnsiDaincorporatesmysticalexperienceinasymbolicnarrativeintobiswork.
He
alsotheorizedaboutmysticalexperience,using
Siifi
termslikemysticalknowledge
Cilfan)
and
love
('ihsq),
and
triedtoexplaintheseexperiences
in
asystematicfashion.IbnsiDa's
main
contributiontothefield
of
mysticism
is
bisattempttoreconcileandtoconnectthedifferenttraditions
of
Neoplatonism,
g n o s t i c i s ~
and
$üfism.
It
is
remarkable
how
these
ideas
fit
intoa
common
framework
-thatof
mysticism.TheseideasMaypossiblystem
from
biscloseunderstanding
of
andsympathywith
Süfi
discourse.
Ibn
siDaalsocontributedtoa
new
literarygenrein
$üfi
literature,mostnotably
in
bisvisionaryrecitals,
which
expressasort
of
mysticalexperience.
