BSTRACT

The purpose of the research project was to determine the biodiversity of fungalspecies in the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens of South Africa. We collectedsamples, isolated the DNA and sequenced the ITS-gene to determine the species of fungi. We successfully identified 25 of the 80 samples that we collected. We concludedthat there is a large variety of fungal species growing in the Pretoria NationalBotanical Gardens.

I
NTRODUCTION

It is estimated that there are over 1.5 million species of fungi worldwide, however only around 100 000 have been formally described by taxonomist.Fungi are everywhere, in the water we drink, the food we eat and the air webreathe. Most of the time we as humans do not even realize it unless we come across a more visible fungi such as mushrooms. Many of the fungi around us are too small to be seen with the naked eye and this is another reason they are not often considered whenthinking of fungal biodiversity in a region. In this investigation we went to the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, collected alarge number of fungal samples and sequenced the ITS-gene to get an indication the.Throughout the investigation we used a genetic approach to identify the fungalspecies collected.3.
