MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME
 
Is a group of blood disorders characterized byabnormal-appearing bone marrow andcytopenia
Characterized by low red blood cells, lowwhite blood cell count with a tendency toinfection, and low platelet count with bleedingproblems
May progress and transform into acutemyelogenous leukemia
formerly known as "
preleukemia
"
 
MDS is a stem cell disorder in which stemcells fail to reproduce and differentiate intothe various types of blood cells. The geneticcomponents of stem cells are altered. Thebone marrow loses its ability to producenormal blood cells, instead producingabnormal (dysplastic) cells. With significantalterations, leukemia (proliferation of abnormal white blood cells)may develop inpeople with MDS.
