Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and, 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Classes are highly interactive, where mutual support and success build the participants confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives, explained Helen Evans, Program Manager from the Allegany/ Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc. The Living Healthy program will not conflict with existing programs or treatment. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education such as cardiac rehabilitation or diabetes instruction. In addition, many people have more than one chronic condition. The program is especially helpful for these people, as it gives them the skills to coordinate all the things needed to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives. A study of 1,000 participants who took the course showed that they experienced improved energy, improved communication with their physicians, reduced stays in the hospital, more confidence in their ability to manage their conditions, increased minutes of exercise, and increased use of cognitive pain and stress management techniques. NATIONAL FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS DAY National Fall Prevention Awareness Day is observed the first day of fall, September 23, 2011 to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults. This year 41 states, including New York are participating in this national effort Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries for Americans 65 and older. More than 18,000 older Americans die every year because of a fall, and the rate has risen dramatically over the last 10 years. When older adults fall, it often leads to a loss of independence, reduced mobility, and serious injury. But the good news is, through appropriate risk management - falls are preventable. Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce falls in the older adult population. Experts recommend a physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components; consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment; having medications reviewed periodically, getting eyes checked annually; and making sure the home environment is safe and supportive. Programs such as Growing Stronger and A Matter of Balance are available in Allegany County. Growing Stronger is a free strength-based exercise program for adults over the age of 55-years-of-age at ten different locations. Classes are an hour long, ongoing throughout the year and led by trained volunteers. A Matter of Balance is an eight session course designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity level of older adults who have concerns about falls. I invite community members to join the Allegany County Fall Prevention Collaborative in observing National Fall Prevention Awareness Day by coming to the Wellsville Farmers Market on Thursday, September 22, 2011; 2:00pm 6:00pm located in the Jones Memorial Hospital outpatient parking lot, explains Melissa Williams, Project Coordinator of the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network (AWSRHN). Individuals over the age of 50 who complete a Fall Prevention Risk Assessment will receive a $5.00 gift certificate to the Wellsville Farmers Market for the day, continued Williams. In addition, a Physical Therapist from Jones Memorial Hospital will be on site administering a balance assessment which will measure risk for falls. I encourage those who are interested in determining their fall risk to participate in the easy and brief assessment, stated Williams. UPCOMING CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS Dont Miss Living Healthy Programs Scheduled For Fall The Allegany County Chronic Disease Team; including the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc., Allegany County Department of Health, and Allegany County Office for the Aging, Embracing Changes and AIM Independent Living Center, invites community members to participate in Living Healthy, an evidence-based program developed by Stanford Patient Education Research Center. With support from the New York State Department of Health and P2 Collaborative of WNY, Inc., partners will increase the knowledge and skills of people living with chronic conditions to better manage their condition which will result in an improved quality of life. Living Healthy is scheduled at two separate locations in Allegany County. The Belmont Series will be held at ACCORD Corporation, Belmont, New York every Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:30 p.m., October 11, 2011 - November 15, 2011. The Alfred Series will be hosted at the Union University Church, Alfred, New York every Wednesday from 1:00-3:30 p.m., beginning October 12, 2011-November 16, 2011. MANAGING CONCERNS ABOUT FALLS Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. The Allegany County Fall Prevention Collaborative in conjunction with Wellsville Manor Care Center is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls course, Tuesday's and Thursday's, throughout the month of September & October, starting September 27th and ending October 20th. The class is scheduled 9:00am - 11:00am, at Wellsville Manor Care Center, Wellsville, New York. Each class will build upon the previous week making it extremely important to attend all sessions. A workbook is provided and refreshments are served. The dogs are brought directly from Germany for superior breeding. Persia was the most attentive listener, although he responds in German. The next meeting on September will feature cakes from Emmojean Sturdevant and Barb Claire with the scheduled speaker being Sue Jordan of Community Bank. Pennsylvania-Dutch Brownies 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) margarine or butter 1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate 1/4 cup light molasses 2 large eggs 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons sugar 1 1/8 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease 13- by 9-inch metal baking pan; set aside. 2. In 4-quart saucepan, melt margarine or butter with chocolate over low heat. Remove saucepan from heat. With wire whisk or fork, stir in molasses, then eggs. 3. With spoon, stir in flour, ginger, cloves, baking soda, salt, 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon just until blended. Spread batter evenly in pan. Bake 15 to 20 minutes until toothpick inserted 2 inches from edge comes out clean. Meanwhile, in cup, combine remaining 2 teaspoons sugar and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon; set aside. 4. Remove pan from oven; immediately sprinkle brownies with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Cool brownies in pan on wire rack at least 2 hours. When cool, cut brownies lengthwise into 3 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 5 pieces. Cut each piece diagonally in half. Makes 30 brownies. Each serving: About 80 calories, 2g total fat (1g saturated), 14mg cholesterol, 80mg sodium, 14g total carbs, 1g protein.
