Christmas Planner
Christmas Planner! To ensure that your Christmas is stress-free this year, it is important to plan in advance. Here are some tips to make sure you can relax and enjoy the festive season. Don't leave shopping until the last minute, it will be a nightmare! With a little bit of pre-christmas planning, life will be easier and stress-free (well almost!) One month before Christmas Day Check with your local post office what the latest posting dates are. There will be last posting dates for domestic and international letters and parcels. Write your Christmas card and Christmas present list. If you know what you need to buy then order it in advance and put it aside, don't put off ordering an item. Popular toys sell out quickly in the weeks leading up to Christmas, make sure you aren't disappointed! Organise your Christmas wardrobe. Make sure the whole family has something nice to wear on Christmas day, buy items now before your money is spent elsewhere. Three Weeks before Christmas Day Make a food shopping list. Order any non-perishable food and drinks. Buy all your Christmas presents and hide them! Start buying 'stocking filler' gifts. Have a look at your Christmas decorations and buy any wrapping paper, gift tags, balloons. You will probably find lots of wrapping paper and gift tags left over from last Christmas so don't waste money buying more, check first! Get the children involved in making decorations. Christmas crafts are great fun for the whole family. Get your Christmas diary organised! There will be lots of parties and functions over the Christmas period. Work parties, children's school nativity plays, make a note of the dates and times. Write and email / post your party invitations and make sure you provide an email address / phone number so your guests can RSVP to them. Two Weeks before Christmas Day Order your Turkey / Christmas meat from the local butchers. Post your Christmas cards. Finish collecting stocking filler presents and put away with the rest of the Christmas presents already gathered. Buy the remainder of Christmas decorations, christmas crackers etc One week to GO !! Post any Christmas cards to those you missed off your Christmas card list! Wrap all your presents and label them clearly. Double check your food cupboard and ensure your freezer and cupboards are well stocked. Check you first aid box and make sure you have plenty of headache, indigestion, allergy tablets. Sit back and relax, no last minute rushing around for you!

Coloring Pages

Christmas Coloring Pages

Our unique cartoon Christmas Coloring pages are for preschoolers, kids, kindergarten, toddlers and children of other ages. Kids and children who are encouraged to play with coloring pages are helped with different development stages.

Toddlers are encouraged to learn how to hold a pencil or crayon. This builds their skills in hand and wrist control. Colouring also helped with hand-eye co-ordination. Toddlers generally can only scribble but they have fun engaging in coloring activities before they start drawing their own pictures At the age of 3-4 kids and preschoolers gain more muscle control and become more adept at drawing shapes such as squares, triangles and circles. Looking at different shapes illustrated in coloring sheets help in this process with our great cartoon pictures to print and color At the age of 4-5 kids begin to combine different shapes to create recognisable pictures such as a person, the sun, a flower or a house At the age of 5+ kids begin to start drawing more detailed pictures and enjoy the use of lots of colors

T'was the night before Christmas

T'was the night before Christmas
T'was the night before Christmas Christmas Poem by Clement Clarke Moore T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winters nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!" T'was the night before Christmas Christmas Poem

What I Should Like

What I Should Like Christmas Poem

What I Should Like A Christmas Poem by Jennie D. Moore On Christmas eve I'd like to lie Awake, when stars are in the sky, And listen to the sound that swells From Santa Claus's jingling bells. I'd like to hear upon the roof The patter of each tiny hoof Of Santa's reindeer overhead, When I am snug and warm in bed. But mamma says I must not lie Awake, or he will pass me by; He does not like the girls or boys To watch him when he brings the toys. I think I'd better go to sleep. I guess the presents all will keep, Then in the morning I shall be Glad to think I did not see. What I Should Like

Santa Claus's Visit

Santa Claus's Visit A Santa Claus Poem by Susie M. Best With a click and a clack And a great big pack, Down through the chimney, Pretty nimbly Somebody comes on Christmas eve! If we are real nice And as still as mice, If we never peep, And are sound asleep, He'll fill our stockings, I do believe! And when we arise Next day our eyes Will grow big to see How perfectly He knew what we all wished to receive! Santa Claus's Visit

Santa's New Idea

Santa's New Idea

Santa's New Idea A Christmas Poem by Author Unknown Said Santa Claus One winters night, I really think its only right That gifts should have a little say Bout where theyll be on Christmas Day. So then and there He called the toys Intended for good girls and boys, And when theyd settled down to hear, He made his plan for them quite clear. These were his words: Soon now, he said, Youll all be speeding off with me To being the Christmas joy and cheer To little ones both far and near. Heres my idea, It seems but fair That you should each one have a share In choosing homes where you will stay On and after Christmas Day. Now the next weeks Before we go Over the miles of glistening snow Find out the tots that you like best And think much nicer than the rest. The toys called out Hurrah! Hurrah! What fun to live always and play With folks we choose theyll surely be Selected very carefully. So, children dear,

When you do see Your toys in socks or on a tree, Youll know in all the world twas you They wanted to be given to. Santa's New Idea

Christmas Presents

Christmas Presents A Christmas Poem by Author Unknown Every year Grandma gets a tin of talcum powder. She always says, Ah my favourite! Even before she opens the wrapping Grandpa always says, Well, I know whats in here. Its two pairs of socks. Just what I wanted! This year, Aunti Vi had an umbrella in an umbrella-shaped parcel, I mean, it looked just like an umbrella. And, before Aunti Vi pulled the paper off, She said to Mum, It will match that new coat of mine. As for Mum and Dad, they just sat there and said, 'Weve given each other a joint present this year Its a digital clock radio for our bedroom. Do you know, they didnt even bother to wrap it up and put it under the tree! At the end, when everything had been given out, Mum said, We mustnt forget the gift-vouchers from Debbie and Jim. We sent them a cheque for the same amount. We always do. I call that a bit unimaginative, dont you? Maybe, when you come to think about it, Grown-ups need Father Christmas far more than children do. For the Children or the Grown-Ups?

For the Children or the Grown-Ups? Christmas Poem

For the Children or the Grown-Ups? A Christmas Poem by Author Unknown Tis the week before Christmas and every night As soon as the children are snuggled up tight And have sleepily murmured their wishes and prayers, Such fun as goes on in the parlour downstairs! For Father, Big Brother, and Grandfather too, Start in with great vigour their youth to renew. The Grown-ups are having great fun - all is well; And they play till it's long past their hour for bed. They try to solve puzzles and each one enjoys The magical thrill of mechanical toys, Even Mother must play with a doll that can talk, And if you assist it, it's able to walk. It's really no matter if paint may be scratched, Or a cogwheel, a nut, or a bolt gets detached; The grown-ups are having great fun - all is well; The children don't know it, and Santa won't tell. Santa Claus And His Works

Santa Claus And His Works

Santa Claus And His Works Christmas Poem by George P Webster This nice little story for Girls and for Boys Is all about Santa Claus, Christmas and toys. So gather around me, but speak not a word For I mean what I say, by you all will be heard. In a nice little city called Santa Claus-ville, With its houses and church at the foot of the hill Lives jolly old Santa Claus; day after day He works and he whistles the moments away. You must know, he is honest, and toils for his bread, And is fat and good-natured with nothing to dread. His eyes are not red, but they twinkle and shine, For he never was known to drink brandy or wine; But day after day at his bench he is found, For he works for good children hard, all the year round. Though busy all day he is happy, and sings While planning and making the funniest things, Such as wagons and horses, and dishes and ladles, And soldiers and monkeys, and little dolls cradles. And garters and socks, and the tiniest shoes, And lots of nice things such as doll babies use. (See, the top of his head is all shining and bare Tis the good men, dear children, who lose all their hair.) With many things more, for I can not tell half But just look at his picture, Im sure you will laugh, With trumpets and drummers, farms, sheep, pigs and cattle, And he makes the pop-guns and the babys tin rattle; Then he takes the new dolls that have long curly hair, And, setting the table, seats each in a chair, And he makes them pretend they are taking their tea Hes the jolliest fellow you ever did see,

And can make a queer codger jump out of a box, Or will make with his knife and new parrot or fox, Or sit with his spectacles over his nose And work all day long making little dolls clothes, Such as dresses and sashes, and hats for the head, And night-gowns to wear when they jump into bed; With his dog standing near him, and spy-glass in hand, He looks for good children all over the land. His home through the long summer months, you must know, Is near the North Pole, in the ice and the snow. And when he sees children at work or at play The old fellow listens to hear what they say; And if they are gentle, loving and kind, He finds where they live, and he makes up his mind That when Christmas shall come in cold frosty December To give them a call, he will surely remember; And hes sure to have with him a bundle of toys For the nice little girls and the good little boys. Oh, if you could see him start out with his team You would doubt your own eyes, and would think it a dream Wrapped up in a bear-skin to keep out the cold, And his sleigh covered over with jewels and gold, While his deer from the mountains, all harnessed with care, Like race-horses prance through the cold winter air. Tis fun just to watch them and hear the bells tinkle, Een the stars seem to laugh and they look down and twinkle. And the hungry raccoon and the fox lean and shy Give a wink as they hear him go galloping by; For they know by his looks and the crack of him whip, And his sleigh-load of toys, he is out for a trip. Then the fox steals the farmers old goose for his dinner, Which you know is not right but the fox is a sinner, And his morals are bad and his habits are loose, For hes never so gay as when stealing a goose. Ah! Here is a picture. Oh, children, just look At the names of the good little girls in his book, And a long list of names of the good little boys, Who never disturb Pa and Ma with their noise. There is Tommy, who tended the baby with care, He gets some beautiful books for his share; And Eliza, just think how bright her eyes will twinkle When she looks in her stockings and finds Rip Van Winkle. And Georgie, you know, is the five-year-old dandy Wont he strut with his pockets all filled up with candy? There the old fellow stands with a queer knowing look, Till he has in his mind every name in the book; And he would be kind to them all if he could,

But he gives his presents to none but the good. An army he gives to the boy who is neat, And never cries when he wants something to eat. And a farm to the boy who goes smiling to school, Who keeps out of the mud and obeys every rule; And all the good girls will get presents, we know, And the boys who behave will have something to show. When Christmas Eve comes, into bed you must creep, And late in the night, when you all are asleep He is certain to come, so your stockings prepare, And hang them all close to the chimney with care, And when in the morning you open your eyes You will meet, I am sure, a most pleasant surprise; And youll laugh and youll giggle and call to Mamma, And keep up the noise till you waken Papa And of this for one morning will be very nice, But the rest of the year be as quiet as mice. How funny he looks as he stands on the round And gathers the toys that hang far from the ground. He is large round the waist, but what care we for that Tis the good-natured people who always get far. The grumbling wolf who lies hidden all day, And the fox that at midnight goes out for his prey, And the serpent that hides in the foliage green, And all of them ugly, ill-tempered and lean; But Santa Claus comes in his queer looking hat, And we know hes good-humored because he is fat. So when you grow up I would not have you slim, But large round the waist, and good natured like him. Just think, if the ladder should happen to break And he should fall down, what a crash it would make; And that is not all, for besides all the noise, It would frighten the dolls and would damage the toys. I told you his home was up north by the Pole: In a palace of ice lives this happy old soul, And the walls are as bright as diamonds that shone In the cave, when Aladdin went in all alone To look for the lamp we have often been told Turned iron and lead into silver and gold. His bedstead is made of ivory white, And he sleeps on a mattress of down every night; For all the day long hew is working his best, And surely at night the old fellow should rest. He uses no gas, for the glimmerying light Of the far polar regions shines all through the night. Should he need for his breakfast a fish or some veal, The sea-calves are his, and the whale and the seal.

Where he lives there is always a cool pleasant air, Last summer, oh! Didnt we wish we were there? Hes a funny old chap, and quite shy, it would seem, For I never but once caught a glimpse of is team; Twas a bright moonlight night, and it stood in full view, And, so you see, I can describe it to you. See! Christmas has come, and he toils like a Turk, And now the old fellow is busy at work There are presents for Julia and Bettie and Jack, And a bundle still left on the old fellows back, And if Evrie behaves well and dont tear his clothes, And quits teasing the cat, why he will, I suppose, Find on Christmas a horse or a gun or a sled, All ready for use when he gets out of bed. But see he has worked quite enough for to-night, He must fill all the stockings before it is light. With his queer looking team through the air he will go, And alight on the roof, now all white with the snow, And into the chimney will dart in a trice, When all are asleep but the cat and the mice; Then will fill up the stockings with candy and toys, And all without making the least bit of noise. When the labors of Christmas are over he goes Straight home, and takes a full week of repose; And then when the holyday frolics are oer, He goes to his shop and his labors once more, And all the long year with his paints and his glue, He is making new toy, little children, for you. So now I must leave you but stand in a row Come Julia, and Bettie, and Louie, and Joe, And Gracie, and Fannie, what are you about Get ready, I say, for a jolly good shout. Now, three cheers for Christmas! Give them, boys, with a will! Three more for the hero of Santa-Clausville; When know he is old, and bald headed and fat, But the cleverest chap in the world for all that, And jollier codger no man ever saw But good-bye, merry Christmas, Hip, Hip, Hip Hurrah! T'was the Internet Night Before Christmas

T'was the Internet Night Before Christmas

T'was the Internet Night Before Christmas by Author Unknown Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net, There were hacker's a surfing. Nerds? Yeah, you bet. The e-mails were stacked by the modem with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The newbies were nestled all snug by their screens, While visions of Java danced in their dreams. My wife on the sofa and me with a snack, We just settled down at my rig (it's a Mac). When out in the Web there arose such a clatter, I jumped to the site to see what was the matter. To a new page my Mac flew like a flash, Then made a slight gurgle. It started to crash!! I gasped at the thought and started to grouse, Then turned my head sideways and clicked on my mouse. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? My Mac jumped to a page that wasn't quite clear. When the image resolved, so bright and so quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick! More rapid than mainframes, more graphics they came, Then Nick glanced toward my screen, my Mac called them by name; "Now Compaq! Now Acer!", my speaker did reel; "On Apple! On Gateway!" Santa started to squeal! "Jump onto the circuits! And into the chip! Now speed it up! Speed it up! Make this thing hip!" The screen gave a flicker, he was into my "Ram", Then into my room rose a full hologram! He was dressed in all red, from his head to his shoes, Which were black (the white socks he really should lose). He pulled out some discs he had stored in his backpack. Santa looked like a dude who was rarin' to hack!

His eyes, how they twinkled! His glasses, how techno! This ain't the same Santa that I used to know! With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head, Santa soon let me know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, gave my Mac a quick poke, And accessed my C drive with only a stroke. He defragged my hard drive, and added a "Dimm", Then threw in some cool games, just on a whim! He worked without noise, his fingers they flew! He distorted some pictures with Kai's Power Goo! He updated Office, Excel and Quicken, Then added a screensaver with a red clucking chicken! My eyes widened a bit, my mouth stood agape, As he added the latest version of Netscape. The drive gave a whirl, as if it were pleased, St. Nick coyly smiled, the computer appeased. Then placing his finger on the bridge of his nose, Santa turned into nothing but ones and zeros! He flew back into my screen and through my uplink, Back into the net with barely a blink. But I heard his sweet voice as he flew from my sight, "Happy surfing to all, and to all a good byte!" T'was the Internet Night Before Christmas

Santa Claus Does Not Forget

Santa Claus Does Not Forget
Written by M.A. Haley Bertie was a very good boy. He was kind, obedient, truthful, and unselfish. He had, however, one great fault,he always forgot. No matter how important the errand, his answer always was, "I forgot." When he was sent with a note to the dressmaker his mother would find the note in his pocket at night. If he was sent to the store in a great hurry, to get something for tea, he would return late, without the article, but with his usual answer. His father and mother talked the matter over, and decided that something must be done to make the little boy remember. Christmas was near, and Bertie was busy making out a list of things which Santa Claus was to bring him. "Santa Claus may forget some of those things," said his mother. "He cannot," replied Bertie; "for I shall write sled, and skates, and drum, and violin, and all the things on this paper. Then when Santa Claus goes to my stocking he will find the list. He can see it and put the things in as fast as he reads." Christmas morning came, and Bertie was up at dawn to see what was in his stocking. His mother kept away from him as long as she could, for she knew what Santa Claus had done. Finally she heard him coming with slow steps to her room. Slowly he opened the door and came towards her. He held in his hand a list very much longer than the one he had made out. He put it in his mother's hand, while tears of disappointment fell from his eyes. "See what Santa Claus left for me; but I think he might have given me one thing besides." His mother opened the roll. It was a list of all the errands Bertie had been asked to do for six months. At the end of all was written, in staring capitals, "I FORGOT." Bertie wept for an hour. Then his mother told him they were all going to grandpa's. For the first time he would see a Christmas-tree. Perhaps something might be growing there for him. It was very strange to Bertie, but on grandpa's tree he found everything he had written on his list. Was he cured of his bad habit? Not all at once; but when his mother saw that he was particularly heedless she would say, "Remember, Santa Claus does not forget."

A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol
From the story written by Charles Dickens Master Peter, and the two ubiquitous young Cratchits went to fetch the goose, with which they soon returned in high procession. Such a bustle ensued that you might have thought a goose the rarest of all birds; a feathered phenomenon, to which a black swan was a matter of course--and in truth it was something very like it in that house. Mrs. Cratchit made the gravy (ready beforehand in a little saucepan) hissing hot; Master Peter mashed the potatoes with incredible vigour; Miss Belinda sweetened up the apple-sauce; Martha dusted the hot plates; Bob took Tiny Tim beside him in a tiny corner at the table; the two young Cratchits set chairs for everybody, not forgetting themselves, and mounting guard upon their posts, crammed spoons into their mouths, lest they should shriek for goose before their turn came to be helped. At last the dishes were set on, and grace was said. It was succeeded by a breathless pause, as Mrs. Cratchit, looking slowly all along the carving-knife, prepared to plunge it in the breast; but when she did, and when the long expected gush of stuffing issued forth, one murmur of delight arose all round the board, and even Tiny Tim, excited by the two young Cratchits, beat on the table with the handle of his knife, and feebly cried Hurrah! There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn't believe there ever was such a goose cooked. Its tenderness and flavour, size and cheapness, were the themes of universal admiration. Eked out by the apple-sauce and mashed potatoes, it was a sufficient dinner for the whole family; indeed, as Mrs. Cratchit said with great delight (surveying one small atom of a bone upon the dish), they hadn't ate it all at last! Yet every one had had enough, and the youngest Cratchits in particular, were steeped in sage and onion to the eyebrows! But now, the plates being changed by Miss Belinda, Mrs. Cratchit left the room alone--too nervous to bear witnesses--to take the pudding up and bring it in. Suppose it should not be done enough! Suppose it should break in turning out. Suppose somebody should have got over the wall of the back-yard and stolen it, while they were merry with the goose--a supposition at which the two young Cratchits became livid! All sorts of horrors were supposed. Hallo! A great deal of steam! The pudding was out of the copper. A smell like a washing-day! That was the cloth. A smell like an eating-house and a pastrycook's next door to each other, with a laundress's next door to that! That was the pudding! In half a minute Mrs. Cratchit entered--flushed, but smiling proudly--with the pudding, like a speckled cannon-ball, so hard and firm, blazing in half of half-a-quartern of ignited brandy, and bedight with Christmas holly stuck into the top. Oh, a wonderful pudding! Bob Cratchit said, and calmly too, that he regarded it as the greatest success achieved by Mrs. Cratchit since their marriage. Mrs. Cratchit said that now the weight was off her mind, she would confess she had had her doubts about the quantity of flour. Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody said or thought it was at all a small pudding for a large family. It would have been, flat heresy to do so. Any Cratchit would have blushed to hint at such a thing. At last the dinner was all done, the cloth was cleared, the hearth swept, and the fire made up. The compound in the jug being tasted, and considered perfect, apples and oranges were put upon the table, and a shovel-full of chestnuts on the fire. Then all the Cratchit family drew round the hearth, in what Bob Cratchit called a circle, meaning half a one; and at Bob Cratchit's elbow stood the family display of glasses. Two tumblers, and a custard-cup without a

handle. These held the hot stuff from the jug, however, as well as golden goblets would have done; and Bob served it out with beaming looks, while the chestnuts on the fire sputtered and cracked noisily. Then Bob proposed: "A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us!" Which all the family re-echoed. "God bless us every one!" said Tiny Tim, the last of all.

The Dolls' Christmas Party

The Dolls' Christmas Party
Written by Viola Roseborough It was the week before Christmas, and the dolls In the toy-shop played together all night. The biggest one was from Paris. One night she said, "We ought to have a party before Santa Claus carries us away to the little girls. I can dance, and I will show you how." "I can dance myself if you will pull the string," said a "Jim Crow" doll. "What shall we have for supper?" piped a little boy-doll in a Jersey suit. He was always thinking about eating. "Oh, dear," cried the French lady, "I don't know what we shall do for supper!" "I can get the supper," added a big rag doll. The other dolls had never liked her very well, but they thanked her now. She had taken lessons at a cooking-school, and knew how to make cake and candy. She gave French names to everything she made, and this made it taste better. Old Mother Hubbard was there, and she said the rag doll did not know how to cook anything. They danced in one of the great shop-windows. They opened a toy piano, and a singing-doll played "Comin' through the Rye," The dolls did not find that a good tune to dance by; but the lady did not know any other, although she was the most costly doll in the shop. Then they wound up a music-box, and danced by that. This did very well for some tunes; but they had to walk around when it played "Hail Columbia," and wait for something else. The "Jim Crow" doll had to dance by himself, for he could do nothing but a "break-down." He would not dance at all unless some one pulled his string. A toy monkey did this; but he would not stop when the dancer was tired. They had supper on one of the counters. The rag doll placed some boxes for tables. The supper was of candy, for there was nothing in the shop to eat but sugar hearts and eggs. The dolls like candy better than anything else, and the supper was splendid. Patsy McQuirk said he could not eat candy. He wanted to know what kind of a supper it was without any potatoes. He got very angry, put his hands into his pockets, and smoked his pipe. It was very uncivil for him to do so in company. The smoke made the little ladies sick, and they all tried to climb into a"horn of plenty" to get out of the way. Mother Hubbard and the two waiters tried to sing "I love Little Pussy;" but the tall one in a brigand hat opened his mouth wide, that the small dollies were afraid they might fall into it. The clown raised both arms in wonder, and Jack in the Box sprang up as high as me could to look down into the fellow's throat. All the baby-dolls in caps and long dresses had been put to bed. They woke up when the others were at supper, and began to cry. The big doll brought them some candy, and that kept them quiet for some time. The next morning a little girl found the toy piano open. She was sure the dolls had been playing on it. The grown-up people thought it had been left open the night before; but they do not understand dolls as well as little people do.

What Happened Christmas Eve

What Happened Christmas Eve
Written by Oliver Herfold It was Christmas Eve and the frost fairies were busy getting ready for Christmas Day. First of all they spread the loveliest white snow carpet over the rough, bare ground; then they hung the bushes and trees with icicles that flashed like diamonds in the moonlight. Later on, they planned to draw beautiful frost pictures on the window panes, to surprise the little children in the morning. The stars shone brightly and the moon sent floods of light in every nook and corner. How could any one think of sleeping when there was such a glory outside! Jessie and Fred had gone to bed very early so they might be the first to shout "Merry Christmas!" but their eyes would not stay shut. "Oh dear! It must be 'most morning," said Fred; "let us creep softly down stairs and maybe we'll catch Santa Claus before he rides off." Hand in hand they tiptoed to the dining-room and peeped out the big window - surely, surely, that was something climbing up the roof of cousin Nellie's house; it must be old Santa. Fred gave a chuckle of delight; to be sure the reindeer were very queer looking objects, and the sleigh such a funny shape, but the children were satisfied. The old fir tree, whose high branches almost touched the roof, knew all about those shadows, but it was so old no one could ever understand a word of the many tales it told. "There's something scratching on the door," whispered Jessie; but it was only a mouse, who had sniffed the delightful odors of the Christmas goodies and was trying his best to find a way into the pantry and test them with his sharp teeth. "Come," said Jessie, "we'll turn to icicles if we stay here much, longer"; so up-stairs they quickly scampered. Papa had been to town on an errand, so it was quite late when he came home. As he was hunting in his pockets for his key, he heard a pitiful cry, and looking down he saw a big, white cat carrying a tiny kitten in her mouth. "Poor thing," said papa, "you shall come inside till morning." Santa Claus had been there with the nicest wagon for Fred and a warm, seal-skin cap that lay right in the middle of it. When papa left the room, puss and her kitty were curled up comfortably on the rug singing their sleepy song. The sun was shining brightly in the dining-room window when Jessie and Fred made their appearance; then Fred just laughed with delight, for right in the crown of his new cap lay the cutest white kitten, with big, blue eyes and wee pink nose, while standing close by as if to guard her darling from danger, was good old mother puss. "I never had a live Christmas present before," said Fred, "now I know Santa Claus read the letter I threw up the chimney because I told him to bring me a kitten and here it is." Papa smiled and looked at mamma, and then everybody said "Merry Christmas" at once.

A Christmas Fairy
A Christmas Fairy
Written by John Strange Winter It was getting very near to Christmas time, and all the boys at Miss Ware's school were talking about going home for the holidays. "I shall go to the Christmas festival," said Bertie Fellows," and my mother will have a party, and my Aunt will give another. Oh! I shall have a splendid time at home." "My Uncle Bob is going to give me a pair of skates," remarked Harry Wadham. "My father is going to give me a bicycle," put in George Alderson. "Will you bring it back to school with you?" asked Harry. "Oh! yes, if Miss Ware doesn't say no." "Well, Tom," cried Bertie, "where are you going to spend your holidays?" "I am going to stay here," answered Tom in a very forlorn voice. "Here - at school - oh, dear! Why can't you go home?" "I can't go home to India," answered Tom. "Nobody said you could. But haven't you any relatives anywhere?" Tom shook his head. "Only in India," he said sadly. "Poor fellow! That's hard luck for you. I'll tell you what it is, boys, if I couldn't go home for the holidays, especially at Christmas--I think I would just sit down and die." "Oh, no, you wouldn't," said Tom. "You would get ever so homesick, but you wouldn't die. You would just get through somehow, and hope something would happen before next year, or that some kind fairy would--" "There are no fairies nowadays," said Bertie. "See here, Tom, I'll write and ask my mother to invite you to go home with me for the holidays." "Will you really?" "Yes, I will. And if she says yes, we shall have such a splendid time. We live in London, you know, and have lots of parties and fun." "Perhaps she will say no?" suggested poor little Tom. "My mother isn't the kind that says no," Bertie declared loudly.

In a few days' time a letter arrived from Bertie's mother. The boy opened it eagerly. It said: My own dear Bertie: I am very sorry to tell you that little Alice is ill with scarlet fever. And so you cannot come for your holidays. I would have been glad to have you bring your little friend with you if all had been well here. Your father and I have decided that the best thing that you can do is to stay at Miss Ware's. We shall send your Christmas present to you as well as we can. It will not be like coming home, but I am sure you will try to be happy, and make me feel that you are helping me in this sad time. Dear little Alice is very ill, very ill indeed. Tell Tom that I am sending you a box for both of you, with two of everything. And tell him that it makes me so much happier to know that you will not be alone. Your own mother. When Bertie Fellows received this letter, which ended all his Christmas hopes and joys, he hid his face upon his desk and sobbed aloud. The lonely boy from India, who sat next to him, tried to comfort his friend in every way he could think of. He patted his shoulder and whispered many kind words to him. At last Bertie put the letter into Tom's hands. "Read it," he sobbed. So then Tom understood the cause of Bertie's grief. "Don't fret over it," he said at last. "It might be worse. Why, your father and mother might be thousands of miles away, like mine are. When Alice is better, you will be able to go home. And it will help your mother if she thinks you are almost as happy as if you could go now." Soon Miss Ware came to tell Bertie how sorry she was for him. "After all," said she, smiling down on the two boys, "it is an ill wind that blows nobody good. Poor Tom has been expecting to spend his holidays alone, and now he will have a friend with him--Try to look on the bright side, Bertie, and to remember how much worse it would have been if there had been no boy to stay with you." "I can't help being disappointed, Miss Ware," said Bertie, his eyes filling with tears. "No; you would be a strange boy if you were not. But I want you to try to think of your poor mother, and write her as cheerfully as you can." "Yes," answered Bertie; but his heart was too full to say more. The last day of the term came, and one by one, or two by two, the boys went away, until only Bertie and Tom were left in the great house. It had never seemed so large to either of them before. "It's miserable," groaned poor Bertie, as they strolled into the schoolroom. "Just think if we were on our way home now--how different." "Just think if I had been left here by myself," said Tom. "Yes," said Bertie, "but you know when one wants to go home he never thinks of the boys that have no home to go to." The evening passed, and the two boys went to bed. They told stories to each other for a long time before they could go to sleep. That night they dreamed of their homes, and felt very lonely. Yet each tried to be brave, and so another day began. This was the day before Christmas. Quite early in the morning came the great box of which Bertie's mother had spoken in her letter. Then, just as dinner had come to an end, there was a peal of the bell, and a voice was heard asking for Tom Egerton.

Tom sprang to his feet, and flew to greet a tall, handsome lady, crying, "Aunt Laura! Aunt Laura!" And Laura explained that she and her husband had arrived in London only the day before. "I was so afraid, Tom," she said, "that we should not get here until Christmas Day was over and that you would be disappointed. So I would not let your mother write you that we were on our way home. You must get your things packed up at once, and go back with me to London. Then uncle and I will give you a splendid time." For a minute or two Tom's face shone with delight. Then he caught sight of Bertie and turned to his aunt. "Dear Aunt Laura," he said, "I am very sorry, but I can't go." "Can't go? and why not?" "Because I can't go and leave Bertie here all alone," he said stoutly. "When I was going to be alone he wrote and asked his mother to let me go home with him. She could not have either of us because Bertie's sister has scarlet fever. He has to stay here, and he has never been away from home at Christmas time before, and I can't go away and leave him by himself, Aunt Laura." For a minute Aunt Laura looked at the boy as if she could not believe him. Then she caught him in her arms and kissed him. "You dear little boy, you shall not leave him. You shall bring him along, and we shall all enjoy ourselves together. Bertie, my boy, you are not very old yet, but I am going to teach you a lesson as well as I can. It is that kindness is never wasted in this world." And so Bertie and Tom found that there was such a thing as a fairy after all.

Jimmy Scarecrow's Christmas

Jimmy Scarecrow's Christmas
Written by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman Jimmy Scarecrow led a sad life in the winter. Jimmy's greatest grief was his lack of occupation. He liked to be useful, and in winter he was absolutely of no use at all. He wondered how many such miserable winters he would have to endure. He was a young Scarecrow, and this was his first one. He was strongly made, and although his wooden joints creaked a little when the wind blew he did not grow in the least rickety. Every morning, when the wintry sun peered like a hard yellow eye across the dry cornstubble, Jimmy felt sad, but at Christmas time his heart nearly broke. On Christmas Eve Santa Claus came in his sledge heaped high with presents, urging his team of reindeer across the field. He was on his way to the farmhouse where Betsey lived with her Aunt Hannah. Betsey was a very good little girl with very smooth yellow curls, and she had a great many presents. Santa Claus had a large wax doll-baby for her on his arm, tucked up against the fur collar of his coat. He was afraid to trust it in the pack, lest it get broken. When poor Jimmy Scarecrow saw Santa Claus his heart gave a great leap. "Santa Claus! Here I am!" he cried out, but Santa Claus did not hear him. "Santa Claus, please give me a little present. I was good all summer and kept the crows out of the corn," pleaded the poor Scarecrow in his choking voice, but Santa Claus passed by with a merry halloo and a great clamour of bells. Then Jimmy Scarecrow stood in the corn-stubble and shook with sobs until his joints creaked. "I am of no use in the world, and everybody has forgotten me," he moaned. But he was mistaken. The next morning Betsey sat at the window holding her Christmas doll-baby, and she looked out at Jimmy Scarecrow standing alone in the field amidst the corn-stubble. "Aunt Hannah?" said she. Aunt Hannah was making a crazy patchwork quilt, and she frowned hard at a triangular piece of red silk and circular piece of pink, wondering how to fit them together. "Well?" said she. "Did Santa Claus bring the Scarecrow any Christmas present?" "No, of course he didn't." "Why not?" "Because he's a Scarecrow. Don't ask silly questions." "I wouldn't like to be treated so, if I was a Scarecrow," said Betsey, but her Aunt Hannah did not hear her. She was busy cutting a triangular snip out of the round piece of pink silk so the piece of red silk could be feather-stitched into it. It was snowing hard out of doors, and the north wind blew. The Scarecrow's poor old coat got whiter and whiter

with snow. Sometimes he almost vanished in the thick white storm. Aunt Hannah worked until the middle of the afternoon on her crazy quilt. Then she got up and spread it out over the sofa with an air of pride. "There," said she, "that's done, and that makes the eighth. I've got one for every bed in the house, and I've given four away. I'd give this away if I knew of anybody that wanted it." Aunt Hannah put on her hood and shawl, and drew some blue yarn stockings on over her shoes, and set out through the snow to carry a slice of plum-pudding to her sister Susan, who lived down the road. Half an hour after Aunt Hannah had gone Betsey put her little red plaid shawl over her head, and ran across the field to Jimmy Scarecrow. She carried her new doll-baby smuggled up under her shawl. "Wish you Merry Christmas!" she said to Jimmy Scarecrow. "Wish you the same," said Jimmy, but his voice was choked with sobs, and was also muffled, for his old hat had slipped down to his chin. Betsey looked pitifully at the old hat fringed with icicles, like frozen tears, and the old snowladen coat. "I've brought you a Christmas present," said she, and with that she tucked her doll-baby inside Jimmy Scarecrow's coat, sticking its tiny feet into a pocket. "Thank you," said Jimmy Scarecrow faintly. "You're welcome," said she. "Keep her under your overcoat, so the snow won't wet her, and she won't catch cold, she's delicate." "Yes, I will," said Jimmy Scarecrow, and he tried hard to bring one of his stiff, outstretched arms around to clasp the doll-baby. "Don't you feel cold in that old summer coat?" asked Betsey. "If I bad a little exercise, I should be warm," he replied. But he shivered, and the wind whistled through his rags. "You wait a minute," said Betsey, and was off across the field. Jimmy Scarecrow stood in the corn-stubble, with the doll-baby under his coat and waited, and soon Betsey was back again with Aunt Hannah's crazy quilt trailing in the snow behind her. "Here," said she, "here is something to keep you warm," and she folded the crazy quilt around the Scarecrow and pinned it. "Aunt Hannah wants to give it away if anybody wants it," she explained. "She's got so many crazy quilts in the house now she doesn't know what to do with them. Good-bye--be sure you keep the doll-baby covered up." And with that she ran cross the field, and left Jimmy Scarecrow alone with the crazy quilt and the doll-baby. The bright flash of colours under Jimmy's hat-brim dazzled his eyes, and he felt a little alarmed. "I hope this quilt is harmless if it IS crazy," he said. But the quilt was warm, and he dismissed his fears. Soon the doll-baby whimpered, but he creaked his joints a little, and that amused it, and he heard it cooing inside his coat. Jimmy Scarecrow had never felt so happy in his life as he did for an hour or so. But after that the snow began to turn to rain, and the crazy quilt was soaked through and through: and not only that, but his coat and the poor dollbaby. It cried pitifully for a while, and then it was still, and he was afraid it was dead. It grew very dark, and the rain fell in sheets, the snow melted, and Jimmy Scarecrow stood halfway up his old boots in water. He was saying to himself that the saddest hour of his life had come, when suddenly he again heard Santa Claus' sleigh-bells and his merry voice talking to his reindeer. It was after midnight, Christmas was over, and Santa was hastening home to the North Pole. "Santa Claus! dear Santa Claus!" cried Jimmy Scarecrow with a great sob, and that time Santa Claus heard him and drew rein. "Who's there?" he shouted out of the darkness.

"It's only me," replied the Scarecrow. "Who's me?" shouted Santa Claus. "Jimmy Scarecrow!" Santa got out of his sledge and waded up. "Have you been standing here ever since corn was ripe?" he asked pityingly, and Jimmy replied that he had. "What's that over your shoulders?" Santa Claus continued, holding up his lantern. "It's a crazy quilt." "And what are you holding under your coat?" "The doll-baby that Betsey gave me, and I'm afraid it's dead," poor Jimmy Scarecrow sobbed. "Nonsense!" cried Santa Claus. "Let me see it!" And with that he pulled the doll-baby out from under the Scarecrow's coat, and patted its back, and shook it a little, and it began to cry, and then to crow. "It's all right," said Santa Claus. "This is the doll-baby I gave Betsey, and it is not at all delicate. It went through the measles, and the chicken-pox, and the mumps, and the whooping-cough, before it left the North Pole. Now get into the sledge, Jimmy Scarecrow, and bring the doll-baby and the crazy quilt. I have never had any quilts that weren't in their right minds at the North Pole, but maybe I can cure this one. Get in!" Santa chirruped to his reindeer, and they drew the sledge up close in a beautiful curve. "Get in, Jimmy Scarecrow, and come with me to the North Pole!" he cried. "Please, how long shall I stay?" asked Jimmy Scarecrow. "Why, you are going to live with me," replied Santa Claus. "I've been looking for a person like you for a long time." "Are there any crows to scare away at the North Pole? I want to be useful," Jimmy Scarecrow said, anxiously. "No," answered Santa Claus, "but I don't want you to scare away crows. I want you to scare away Arctic Explorers. I can keep you in work for a thousand years, and scaring away Arctic Explorers from the North Pole is much more important than scaring away crows from corn. Why, if they found the Pole, there wouldn't be a piece an inch long left in a week's time, and the earth would cave in like an apple without a core! They would whittle it all to pieces, and carry it away in their pockets for souvenirs. Come along; I am in a hurry." "I will go on two conditions," said Jimmy. "First, I want to make a present to Aunt Hannah and Betsey, next Christmas." "You shall make them any present you choose. What else?" "I want some way provided to scare the crows out of the corn next summer, while I am away," said Jimmy. "That is easily managed," said Santa Claus. "Just wait a minute." Santa took his stylographic pen out of his pocket, went with his lantern close to one of the fence-posts, and wrote these words upon it: NOTICE TO CROWS Whichever crow shall hereafter hop, fly, or flop into this field during the absence of Jimmy Scarecrow, and therefrom purloin, steal, or abstract corn, shall be instantly, in a twinkling and a trice, turned snow-white, and be ever after a disgrace, a byword and a reproach to his whole race. Per order of Santa Claus. "The corn will be safe now," said Santa Claus, "get in." Jimmy got into the sledge and they flew away over the fields, out of sight, with merry halloos and a great clamour of bells.

The next morning there was much surprise at the farmhouse, when Aunt Hannah and Betsey looked out of the window and the Scarecrow was not in the field holding out his stiff arms over the corn stubble. Betsey had told Aunt Hannah she had given away the crazy quilt and the doll-baby, but had been scolded very little. "You must not give away anything of yours again without asking permission," said Aunt Hannah. "And you have no right to give anything of mine, even if you know I don't want it. Now both my pretty quilt and your beautiful dollbaby are spoiled." That was all Aunt Hannah had said. She thought she would send John after the quilt and the doll-baby next morning as soon as it was light. But Jimmy Scarecrow was gone, and the crazy quilt and the doll-baby with him. John, the servant-man, searched everywhere, but not a trace of them could he find. "They must have all blown away, mum," he said to Aunt Hannah. "We shall have to have another scarecrow next summer," said she. But the next summer there was no need of a scarecrow, for not a crow came past the fence-post on which Santa Claus had written his notice to crows. The cornfield was never so beautiful, and not a single grain was stolen by a crow, and everybody wondered at it, for they could not read the crow-language in which Santa had written. "It is a great mystery to me why the crows don't come into our cornfield, when there is no scarecrow," said Aunt Hannah. But she had a still greater mystery to solve when Christmas came round again. Then she and Betsey had each a strange present. They found them in the sitting-room on Christmas morning. Aunt Hannah's present was her old crazy quilt, remodelled, with every piece cut square and true, and matched exactly to its neighbour. "Why, it's my old crazy quilt, but it isn't crazy now!" cried Aunt Hannah, and her very spectacles seemed to glisten with amazement. Betsey's present was her doll-baby of the Christmas before; but the doll was a year older. She had grown an inch, and could walk and say, "mamma," and "how do?" She was changed a good deal, but Betsey knew her at once. "It's my doll-baby!" she cried, and snatched her up and kissed her. But neither Aunt Hannah nor Betsey ever knew that the quilt and the doll were Jimmy Scarecrow's Christmas presents to them.

The Little Match Girl

The Little Match Girl
Written by Hans Christian Anderson It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, that they had belonged to her mother, and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling along at a terrible rate. One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her even a penny. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along; poor little child, she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not. Lights were shining from every window, and there was a savoury smell of roast goose, for it was New-year's eve yes, she remembered that. In a corner, between two houses, one of which projected beyond the other, she sank down and huddled herself together. She had drawn her little feet under her, but she could not keep off the cold; and she dared not go home, for she had sold no matches, and could not take home even a penny of money. Her father would certainly beat her; besides, it was almost as cold at home as here, for they had only the roof to cover them, through which the wind howled, although the largest holes had been stopped up with straw and rags. Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Ah! perhaps a burning match might be some good, if she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, just to warm her fingers. She drew one outscratch! how it sputtered as it burnt! It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed to the little girl that she was sitting by a large iron stove, with polished brass feet and a brass ornament. How the fire burned! and seemed so beautifully warm that the child stretched out her feet as if to warm them, when, lo! the flame of the match went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the half-burnt match in her hand. She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame, and where its light fell upon the wall it became as transparent as a veil, and she could see into the room. The table was covered with a snowy white table-cloth, on which stood a splendid dinner service, and a steaming roast goose, stuffed with apples and dried plums. And what was still more wonderful, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, to the little girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but the thick, damp, cold wall before her. She lighted another match, and then she found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas-tree. It was larger and more beautifully decorated than the one which she had seen through the glass door at the rich merchant's. Thousands of tapers were burning upon the green branches, and coloured pictures, like those she had seen in the show-windows, looked down upon it all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the match went out. The Christmas lights rose higher and higher, till they looked to her like the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it a bright streak of fire. Someone is dying, thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only

one who had ever loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going up to God. She again rubbed a match on the wall, and the light shone round her; in the brightness stood her old grandmother, clear and shining, yet mild and loving in her appearance. Grandmother, cried the little one, O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large, glorious Christmas-tree. And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day, and her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God. In the dawn of morning there lay the poor little one, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall; she had been frozen to death on the last evening of the year; and the New-year's sun rose and shone upon a little corpse! The child still sat, in the stiffness of death, holding the matches in her hand, one bundle of which was burnt. She tried to warm herself, said some. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory she had entered with her grandmother, on New-year's day.

The Legend of Babouscka

The Legend of Babouscka
A Russian Folk Tale The Legend of Babouscka It was the night the dear Christ-Child came to Bethlehem. In a country far away from Him, an old, old woman named Babouscka sat in her snug little house by her warm fire. The wind was drifting the snow outside and howling down the chimney, but it only made Babouscka's fire burn more brightly. "How glad I am that I may stay indoors," said Babouscka, holding her hands out to the bright blaze. But suddenly she heard a loud rap at her door. She opened it and her candle shone on three old men standing outside in the snow. Their beards were as white as the snow, and so long that they reached the ground. Their eyes shone kindly in the light of Babouscka's candle, and their arms were full of precious things--boxes of jewels, and sweet-smelling oils, and ointments. "We have travelled far, Babouscka," they said, "and we stop to tell you of the Baby Prince born this night in Bethlehem. He comes to rule the world and teach all men to be loving and true. We carry Him gifts. Come with us, Babouscka." But Babouscka looked at the drifting snow, and then inside at her cozy room and the crackling fire. "It is too late for me to go with you, good sirs," she said, "the weather is too cold." She went inside again and shut the door, and the old men journeyed on to Bethlehem without her. But as Babouscka sat by her fire, rocking, she began to think about the Little Christ-Child, for she loved all babies. "Tomorrow I will go to find Him," she said; "tomorrow, when it is light, and I will carry Him some toys." So when it was morning Babouscka put on her long cloak and took her staff, and filled her basket with the pretty things a baby would like--gold balls, and wooden toys, and strings of silver cobwebs--and she set out to find the Christ-Child. But, oh, Babouscka had forgotten to ask the three old men the road to Bethlehem, and they travelled so far through the night that she could not overtake them. Up and down the road she hurried, through woods and fields and towns, saying to whomsoever she met: "I go to find the Christ-Child. Where does He lie? I bring some pretty toys for His sake." But no one could tell her the way to go, and they all said: "Farther on, Babouscka, farther on." So she travelled on and on and on for years and years--but she never found the little Christ-Child. They say that old Babouscka is travelling still, looking for Him. When it comes Christmas Eve, and the children are lying fast asleep, Babouscka comes softly through the snowy fields and towns, wrapped in her long cloak and carrying her basket on her arm. With her staff she raps gently at the doors and goes inside and holds her candle close to the little children's faces. "Is He here?" she asks. "Is the little Christ-Child here?" And then she turns sorrowfully away again, crying: "Farther on, farther on!" But before she leaves she takes a toy from her basket and lays it beside the pillow for a

Christmas gift. "For His sake," she says softly, and then hurries on through the years and forever in search of the little Christ-Child.

Story of Jesus Birth

Story of Jesus Birth
Scripture story of the Nativity Taken from the Holy Bible The Story of Mary The Beginning of the Christmas Story as told in the Gospel of Luke Then, in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. Upon entering, the Angel said to her: "Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women." When she had heard this, she was disturbed by his words, and she considered what kind of greeting this might be. The Angel said to her: "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. Behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name: JESUS. He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity. And his kingdom shall have no end." Then Mary said to the Angel, "How shall this be done, since I do not know man?" In response, the Angel said to her: "The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son, in her old age. And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren. For no word will be impossible with God." Then Mary said: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word." And the Angel departed from her. The Story of Joseph The Beginning of the Christmas Story as told in the Gospel of Matthew Now the procreation of the Christ occurred in this way. After his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found to have conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, since he was just and was not willing to hand her over, preferred to send her away secretly. But while thinking over these things, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to accept Mary as your wife. For what has been formed in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall give birth to a son. And you shall call his name JESUS. For he shall accomplish the salvation of his people from their sins." Now all this occurred in order to fulfil what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb, and she shall give birth to a son. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means: God is with us."

Then Joseph, arising from sleep, did just as the Angel of the Lord had instructed him, and he accepted her as his wife. And he knew her not, yet she bore her son, the firstborn. And he called his name JESUS. Story of Jesus birth The Story of the Nativity as told in the Gospel of Luke And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled. This was the first enrolment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius. And all went to be declared, each one to his own city. Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child. Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth. And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn. And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock. And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear. And the Angel said to them: "Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people. For today a Saviour has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will." And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us." And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger. Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy. And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them. Story of Jesus birth - The Visit of the Magi (The Three Wise Men) The Beginning of the Christmas Story as told in the Gospel of Matthew And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying: "Where is he who was born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to adore him." Now king Herod, hearing this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. And gathering together all the leaders of the priests, and the scribes of the people, he consulted with them as to where the Christ would be born. And they said to him: "In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. For from you shall go forth the ruler who shall guide my people Israel.' " Then Herod, quietly calling the Magi, diligently learned from them the time when the star appeared to them. And sending them into Bethlehem, he said: "Go and diligently ask questions about the boy. And when you have found him, report back to me, so that I, too, may come and adore him."

And when they had heard the king, they went away. And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was. Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy. And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having received a response in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back by another way to their own region.

The Shepherds and the Angels

The Shepherds and the Angels
Adapted from the Bible And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. And an angel of the Lord stood by them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this is the sign unto you; ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will toward men. And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in the manger. And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child. And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them. And when eight days were fulfilled his name was called: "JESUS"
