English Phonetics Class


( For F.1 to F.3 Students )

International Phonetic (H.K.) Association was founded in January 1991, and since
then has provided a variety of courses in English Phonetics and phonology for people in
Hongkong. The courses "English Pronunciation for Students" and "Practical English
Phonetics and Phonology for teachers" have provided the students and teachers of English
with an opportunity to understand the important theories and skills in pronunciation as well as
other features of spoken English.

Aims: To improve students' understanding of English pronunciation and speech


systems with the help of diagrams, IPA symbols and basic theories.

Topics: 1) Organs of speech and the production of English sounds


2) The International Phonetic Alphabet: D. Jones and K.K.
3) Vowels and diphthongs
4) Consonants: the manner and the places of articulation
5) Syllable and stress
6) Application of phonetic symbols in dictionaries
7) The pronunciation of -ed ending verbs
8) Weak-forms and strong-forms
9) Connected speech: linking, assimilation, elision
10) Introduction to intonation and phrasing
11) Accents of English: Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American
