Title: Care At Work 2011- Sheila Marcelo- Care.comTranscription:Ladies and gentleman: Shelia Lurio Marcelo, founder and CEO of Care.com.Welcome to the first annual Care At
Work Conference: Focus Forward. There’s been a lot of interest inhow people work today. It’s not just the hours that we work or the industries, in which we work in, or
their global scope, but actually the technology tools that we use today that impact our minds and bodiesmake it even harder to talk about work without talking about our lifestyles. Last August, I read an articlein The New York Times about a number of brain scientists who went up the river in Utah to conduct aresearch experiment on themselves: their own minds. More specifically, they were interested inanswering the question how sustained and heavy use of digital devices influence the way we think andact and how the state of the mind responds to a week without technology. Can you imagine a weekwithout your Blackberry? I mean
—that’s pretty difficult for me. The line in the article that inspired mewas from a Psychology professor, David Strater, who said “Attention is the Holy Grail.” So true in our
busy lives with everything that we juggle. Attention applies in our personal lives. We have to be presentfor our families and our children. As a CEO and many of my team knows this, I travel quite a bit and I am
dependent on many of my gadgets. I’ve got a Blackberry, an i
-phone, an i-pad and a laptop. I have all
four and I travel with all four. In fact, what I typically do is I’m on the phone and I’m looking at a file on
my i-pad. People always wonder
why are you doing it with all four?
”.
And if T-mobile fails, I can alwaysuse AT&T. So not only am I dependent on these tools as a CEO, but as Mom and as a chronic multi-tasker. Some of you are nodding. To me, technology is essential. So today you will actually see metweeting out some points that I hear and if you hear something that you want to share, tweet it out andour handle is up there @CareAtWork so please go ahead and share with the world some of the thingsthat inspire you. So in business, attention is also the name of the game. We have to win the attentionof our customers to succeed and in turn, to be able to do that we have to hold the attention our
employees. The article coincided with Care.com’s own organizational focus. Our then four year
-oldcompany had just raised twenty million dollars and we were growing very very rapidly. In fact, we were
at dinner last night and somebody had asked the question, I think C.A. had said “I started when it was45; we’re now 90 people” and our recs—
I think Scott I think we have 40 that we need to hire in twomonths
—so it’s growin
g very very rapidly. We had just launched a new part of our business. We wereexcited that Facebook, Hallmark, Michigan State University and these other companies were veryinterested in providing their employees access to the help they need for their lo
ved ones, whether that’s
their for parents, their children or their pets. We at Care.com found ourselves in conversations withleading organizations about what kinds of things mattered to their employees at work and at home. Wewere inspired by the projects that they created and the programs they launched to address the shiftingneeds of the modern workforce
from BabyBoomers to Gen Y. Two very different audiences as youknow. We had a sense that our clients wanted to meet each other
to trade notes and to sharelearning experiences. And we also had many friends of our speakers who are here today who wanted toshare their insights on the challenges of maintaining focus. And this event, Focus Forward, was born. Itwas actually an idea originated by C.A. Webb and Jo Flattery and I wanted to thank them personally for
inspiring us to do this event. So I’d like to welcome all of you—
