Thisarticlehopestoclarifytheprocessofbringinghorticulturaltherapyprogramsintothesocialserviceagencyarena.Itspecificallyoffershelptothosewishingtobringhorticulturaltherapytotheiragenciesortreatmentcenters..Thisspeakstothetypical(ifthereisone)socialservice,residential,ordaytreatmentfacility.Thisarticleaddressestheissuesofhowtodealwithkeyagencypersonnelinasystematicway,therebyincreasingopportunitiesforsuccessininstitutinghorticulturaltherapy.Thisarticlealsoaddressestheissueofhorticulturaltherapybeingapproachedattheprogramlevelratherthanattheprojectlevel,eachapproachbringingwithitdecisionsandtasksthatcanhavelargeandreverberatingchangesthat,ifnotpreparedfor,maystopthedevelopmentinitstracksorderailitindefinitelyBriefly,theprogramlevelisseenasanenduringconceptTohaveahorticulturaltherapyprogramimpliesthatitbeinstitutionalized,funded,supervised,andviewedasanintegralpartoftheagency'sregularbusinesswithclients..Horticultureprojectsontheotherhandtendtobebriefandtime-limitedaffairsthatmayormaynotincludehorticulturaltherapytechniques.

-AnitaLangeTheprojectlevel,althoughbeneficial,ismostoftenlookeduponasseasonalgardeningprojects.Theconsiderationtocreateahorticulturaltherapyprogrampresupposesthatasignificantamountofwork,details,training,andadequatefinancialresourceswillbeinvolved..Thismeansasustained,institutionalized(inthehighestsenseoftheword),built-in,permanent,andbudgetedforprogramthatbecomesasmuchapartoftheagency'sbusinesswiththeclientsasanyotherprogramInthecaseofatreatmentcenter,afully-functioninghorticulturaltherapyprogramcouldbeasmuchapartoftheclinicaltreatmentasanyothertherapyprogramsuchasindividualtherapy,familytherapy,grouptherapy,occupationaltherapy,orplaytherapy.Therefore,ahorticulturetherapyprogramisbestseenaspartofanintegratedmodelworkinginconjunctionwithothertreatmentmodalitiesItistobeviewedasanintegralpieceofamultidisciplinaryteamprovidinghealingandrestoration.Asstated,aprogramlevelofdevelopmentcanhaveprofoundeffectsonanagencybecausewhatisbeingconsideredisinpartaphilosophicalshiftinthethinkingabouthowtreatmentmaybedelivered..Evenmorebasicistheview

Whenconsideringbringinghorticulturaltherapyintothelifeofone'sagencyatthepIOgmmlevel,whetheroneisasupervisor,linestaff,orexecutivedirector,itwouldbeadvantageoustoknowhowtoapproachothergroupsofprofessionalsandparaprofessionalsandmakeacompellingcasefOIinstitutingthistypeofprogramintheorganization's

Toanyonewhohashadtheexperienceofwitnessingtheuseofhorticulturaltherapyinmentalhealthprograms,theunmeasuredbenefitsandvaluesareobvious..AsCharlesLewis(1983)stated,"Simplehorticulturalpracticessuchasgrowthofseedlings,rootingofcuttings,unfoldingofaflower,elicitsubtleresponseswhichcanbebeneficial,andwhichsymbolicallyfulfillmanyhumanneeds.Whencombinedwithprofessionaltreatment,thesesubjectiveresponsestoplantshavebeenfoundtobetherapeuticandrehabilitative"(1983,June)Tothehorticulturaltherapist,Lewis'sentimentsmakeperfectsense,buttomanythisisanewandunfamiliarwayofworkingwithchildrenwhohavesevereemotional/behavioraldifficulties.Itiswellknownthathorticulturaltherapyisasuccessfulwayto
