The Quandong Mothand other insects onquandong trees
Kaye Ferguson and Peter BaileyFactsheet: 6/2001

About this Publication-1
v
Quandong is a fruit native to Australia. A rich nativeinsect fauna has evolved to live on the fruit and foliage ofthis tree.
v
This publication is intended to assist quandong producersidentify some of the insects found on quandong trees insouth-eastern Australia
v
Damage:
Ø
Quandong moth is the most damaging of quandonginsects. Its larvae eat flesh of the fruit, and maydestroy or downgrade up to 90% of fruit.
Ø
Leaf feeding insects, although sometimes fairlyconspicuous, may not greatly affect fruit yield.
Ø
Scale insects may be damaging but on unsprayed treesthey are usually controlled by natural enemies. Use ofbroad spectrum insecticides may kill these naturalenemies.
Ø
Gall forming insects and bud mites (FamilyEriophyidae) have been reported causing damage tosome trees.
v
Natural enemies
Ø
Quandong moth appears to have few effective naturalenemies. Species of parasitic wasps have beenrecorded from eggs and larvae, but their incidence isnot sufficient to reduce fruit damage.
Ø
Other insects are probably controlled by a range ofnatural enemies including generalist predators such ascoccinellid beetles (ladybirds), lacewings andpredatory mites, as well as parasitic wasps. These areall likely to be killed by broad spectrum insecticides.

About this Publication-2
v
Management of quandong moth
Ø
Monitoring: this publication shows how and when tomonitor for quandong moth.
Ø
For producers who opt for chemical control, timing ofapplications is critical. A mis-timed application isworse than none at all. Avoid calendar applications.
Ø
Chemical control should aim to kill eggs or the younglarvae before they damage fruit. Careful monitoring isessential. Only apply insecticides when necessary.
Ø
No chemicals are recommended in this document.Check for chemicals which have permits on thewebsite of the National Registration Authority(www.nra.gov.au).
