What is terroir?
The French term, Terroir (pronounced tear-wah), is what makes a specific grape-growing site, and its wine, distinctive. It is a philosophy, originated in Europe, that believes a multitude of influences in nature surrounding a vineyard, or wine region, create a wines character. These natural factors include soil composition, day and nighttime temperatures, the amount of rainfall, the direction of the sun, just to name a few. Terroir explains why some of the best California Pinot Noir, for example, originate in the regions of Carneros and Russian River. They may be separated by about 30 miles but they share similar soils and experience the same cooling effects from bodies of water nearby either the ocean, in the case of the Russian River area, or San Pablo Bay for the Carneros region. Both regions produce rich and complex wines made from Pinot Noir grapes that reflect their similar terroirs. Over centuries of winemaking around the world, it has been learned that the uniqueness of a specific location is what creates the personality of a wine. Although the French word terroir has no English translation, it has become a term used everywhere to describe this interaction of many factors that influence a grape-growing site. So, the next time you taste a great wine, whether Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel, take notice of where the grapes were grown. If a distinct site is listed on the label as the origin of the grapes, such as the name of a specific vineyard or an official wine geographic region (also known as an appellation) know that you are tasting more than just the grapes that made the wine. You are experiencing terroir everything in nature that makes that site, or region, unique.

ships with top growers and securing long-term grape contracts for premium fruit. These are some of the keys to their success and quality. Simply put, we focus on what grape varietal grows best where, winemaker Zorn said recently. Born in the United States and raised in Germany, he attended that countrys top school of enology and worked at the famous Weingut Pieroth winery before returning to the United States 27 years ago. When he returned he became winemaker at a number of top California wineries and along the way he developed a great understanding of grape growing and winemaking in California, eventually becoming a specialist in its particular and distinctive viticultural properties and characteristics. My winemaking techniques are informed by this ideology: the gentle handling of fruit, the use of oak when it is appropriate, minimal filtration and fining, and careful preservation of acidity. They are all indicative of the level of care exercised throughout. Acacia Vineyard
Growing, Protecting and Showing Off Great Grapes Since 1979
by Josh Stein
With the finest of wines, its what the winemaker doesnt do which matters much more than what she does. If youve got great grapes, you dont need to over-work the result; at Acacia Vineyard, which was founded in 1979 less than two miles from San Pablo Bay, theyve got one hundred and fifty acres worth of great grapes which have produced worldrenowned Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for more than three decades. And as members of the Carneros Wine Alliance and creators of the Marsh Project, Acacia has taken the lead in making sure Carneros stays a place which will always produce great grapes. The marsh in question is the 13,000-acre Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area, which is home to twenty-five species of waterfowl and several threatened or endangered bird, plant, mammal and fish species. The marsh abuts the Carneros District, so Acacias winemaking team creates a special Marsh Chardonnay, which is sold exclusively at the winery, and the funds go into a special trust which supports the marshs restoration. Equally, to help shelter marsh wildlife, Acacia employees planted black walnut and coastal oaks, and the winery donated the irrigation equipment and employee time necessary for this project, among many others. But thats nothing new for this winery, for, as you have probably gathered by now, its always been at the head of the pack. Indeed, Acacia was one of the first to recognize the Carneros regions potential for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the winery was also a forerunner in vineyard-designating their wines because of the lot-by-lot methodology it has employed for its fermentations. Rather than homogenizing the grapes or juice, each vineyard block is made separately and goes into its own barrels, allowing time and cellar conditions to do their magic before any decisions are made about bottling this helps to preserve the uniqueness of each vintage and the specialness of the particular vineyard in the glass. Youll probably recognize those vineyard names: St. Clair Vineyard, which has produced single vineyard wines since 1979; Beckstoffer; Lone Tree Vineyard; Sangiacomo and Winery Lake Vineyard. The tasting room is, naturally, the best place to try these wines and see the winemaking in action, and the enthusiastic staff are happy to pour their best. Acacias Pinot Noirs exhibit seductive flower, tea and fruit aromas, and they showcase layered fruit flavors complimented by spice notes. Equally, Acacias Chardonnays show off opulent aromas of fruit and citrus, and oak is used only as accent to the generous fruit and spices. In addition to several different vineyard-designated bottlings of these classics, the tasting room also pours other exclusive releases, which include Sauvignon Blanc and Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Viognier. Dont skip these they show off what happens when winemaker Matthew Glynn gets to play a bit. And thats the other part of Acacias success since how best to deliver these kinds of results vintage after vintage is what the Acacia system has been developing since before just about anyone in Carneros. Long before any grapes have been crushed, attention to lots of details has to have taken place; meticulous pruning, careful canopy and cluster management, planting beneficial cover crops within the vineyards, and constant monitoring of all facets of the vineyard environment are required to produce the best grapes. Once judged ready for picking, every lot is harvested and sorted by hand only perfect grapes go into Acacia Chard, Pinot or any other wine! The winemaking is equally as detail-oriented, focusing on gentle handling and extraction, by-hand punch downs for reds and barrel fermentations for whites. There are two ways to have access to these wines, and both take a little planning but are well worth it. Absolutely, visit the winery and you need to make a reservation because while theyre open daily, it is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (707) 226-9991 ext. 2. Equally, there are few wine clubs which routinely offer access to these kinds of select bottlings let alone at a discount and fewer still which give club members both first and last chance at those wines! It might be surprising at other places, but not at Acacia. Theyve known since 1979 what it takes to steward great grapes from bud to glass. Go taste for yourself and youll agree. Enjoy!

Mumm Napa
by Charles Neave
Start the day with some bubbles, Mumm Napa Hospitality Manager Kathy McClure says with a laugh and her always present smile. As she further explained, it is a piece of local knowledge that the morning hours from 10 a.m. on are the perfect time to have a sip of their stellar wine. Its not crowded, so enjoy those bubbles as you look out at the Mayacamas Mountains a few miles to the west, across the vines and the Valley. Some days multi-colored hot air balloons might be ending their flights. There may even be the last vestiges of fog lifting as the sun melts it away. But no matter what is happening, it is a magical time. Yes, people flock here in the afternoon and later in the day, but if you know what to do, then begin your day here, where bubbles meet the morning. Civilized, dont you think? As a British friend of mine said, with typical English understatement: Most certainly, what? Here, have a sip. And so another delightful day begins in the Napa Valley. Perhaps the premiere spot to enjoy all of this is on the Oak Terrace, built around what else? an old and stately oak tree. In fact, that tree and its history helped to dictate the design of the deck. This is also where some of their older library bottlings are served. It is between the tasting room and the winery itself. The winery also holds their permanent collection of Ansel Adams prints, as well as a rotating display of works by other photographers as well. Just one of the surprises at this winery that made its first wine in 1987, though its French heritage goes back centuries. The tasting salon, with its wide expanses of vineyard-facing glass, stylish dcor and table service, has been a Valley attraction since the day it opened in 1990. Service is both friendly and efficient, and you are welcome to linger and enjoy their selection of wines. Also youll learn that this is the only sparkling wine house in the county to use exclusively Napa fruit. If you want to take some wine or other items home with you their shop is stocked with wine much of it winery exclusive and surprises (including one of my favorites, a Mumm Napa dog collar). Under the Mumm Napa label you can find both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the components for fine sparkling wine. As to what to taste? The short answer is to follow the tasting room staffs lead. You will undoubtedly find a favorite (mine is the DVX and the refreshing Brut Ros, but the Santana is also hard to beat, with a formula influenced by music legend Carlos Santana), but to be honest, you simply cant go wrong. Add to that this tranquil setting and gracious service and really, how could you? The Mumm Napa tasting room is open every day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. with last seating at 4:45. Theyre located at 8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford. For groups of six or more, advance reservations are necessary. There is also a complimentary tour at 10 a.m. And three more tours throughout the day. For more information, call them at 1-800686-6272 or go to www.mummnapa.com where you can also find information on special events and on one of the Napa Valleys most popular wine club, the Club Vivant.

serving this type of cuisine. Coles hand selects only the finest corn-finished Midwestern USDA prime and Certified Angus Beef steaks and chops, along with ocean-fresh seafood and local produce. Beth adds that a lot of what makes Coles top notch has to do with the stellar staff. Most of which are still with us since we opened
our doors. They are polished professionals and that allows our mission to be translated, said Beth. People also like the fact that we are locally owned. In fact, keep your eyes open for Chef Greg Cole on your next visit. He is hands on, along with Chef De Cuisine Jess Mndez, who has worked unerringly with Greg for more than 25 years. Coles Chop House is warm and inviting. The sleek, Honduran-mahogany bar invites you to sit and linger over a Napa Manhattan or any of their long list of fine cocktails. Now youre ready to feast your eyes on a menu featuring 21-day, dry-aged, prime steaks; Certified Angus Beef; formula-fed veal; New Zealand lamb and fresh seafood. An extensive wine list emphasizing Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the areas finest producers enhances the dining experience. The bar will beckon you back after dinner for a night cap. Enjoy! Welcome to
CALISTOGA
So
Series is very popular with Valley residents said Mark Mathewson, Sterling Vineyards Visitors Center Manager. Remarkably, we have fans that plan their summer getaways around our screening schedule. Bring friends and family to Sterling, watch a great movie over a glass of wine and benefit two local causes. Each screening offers wine tasting and festival seating on the Sterling Vineyard Meadow at Sterling Vineyards, 1111 Dunaweal Lane in Calistoga. All Sterling Silver Screen films are suitable for informed family viewing; however, parents are suggested to review MPAA advisories online in advance of attendance. The grounds open at 7 p.m. and guests are encouraged to arrive early, dress in layers and bring a blanket or low backed beach chairs to sit on. A pre-show of classic cartoons, followed by the feature presentation, begins at dusk. Admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (under 16). All proceeds from tickets sales and a percentage of wine sales benefit the non-profit Stars & Vines Fund. More information is available at www.sterlingvineyards.com, or by calling (707) 942-3322.

Moshin Vineyards
by Sue Straight, The Wine Wench
Fabulous, reasonably priced wines; friendly, knowledgeable, fun staff; rustic, comfortable surroundings and great views of the Russian River Valley what more could you want? Im talking about Moshin Vineyards here, people. It is simply a must-stop on your wine country tour. The below quote is from the front page of Moshin Vineyards website and it truly sums up what they are all about forwardthinking, eco-friendly (and just plain friendly in general) and dedicated to producing world-class wines. The goal at Moshin Vineyards is to carefully guide the grapes through the winemaking process and bring you a wine that expresses a truthful view into the heart of the vine. Our farming methods are sustainable, winemaking philosophy is minimally invasive, and we have established energy-saving practices through the use of gravityflow and solar energy. Hop in your car and wend your way out Westside Road in Sonoma Countys Russian River Valley. This incredibly scenic area is home to some of the best Pinot Noirs in the world and Moshin Vineyards Pinot Noirs are definitely contenders for the title (more on that later). Pull into the parking lot, get out of your car and take a big sniff of fresh west Sonoma County air. Your nose will be delighted by scents of wildflowers, eucalyptus and at harvest time, the literally intoxicating scent of fermenting grapes. Take a look around the building that houses the tasting room, offices and winery is a rustic, barn-like building with an ivy- covered arbor. Big ceramic pots with colorful flowers stand sentry at the front doors. A large, whimsical metal hummingbird sculpture sits down by the road, inviting smiles and comments. The tasting room is large and airy, with slate floors and a long slatefronted bar which spans the back of the room. Every month, the art of local artists (including Amber Moshin) is featured on the walls. A good variety of non-wine merchandise, including T-shirts, books, glassware and hats, is laid out in enticing displays. Mosey up to the bar and try a few wines. Lets talk about the wines. I tasted a few and loved them all, but only have room to write about a couple, so here we go 2010 Ros of Pinot Noir, $21: Delicate, mouthwatering aromas of strawberry, herb tea and white flowers continue as flavors in the crisp, juicy mouth. This is an absolutely perfect summer sipper! 2009 Pinot Noir, Halos Hill Vineyard, $45: This gorgeous wine is a Pinot Noir lovers dream. It is super-varietal, with intense aromas and flavors of strawberry, cherry, gingerbread spice, rose petal and a whiff of smoke, all wrapped up in a silky, sexy mouthfeel. OMG! Take it from The Wine Wench, you dont want to miss Moshin Vineyards. They are located at 10295 Westside Road, Healdsburg. The tasting room is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call (707) 433-5499 or visit the website at www.moshinvineyards.com.

refreshing. It is a perfect blend of a juicy handful of aromatic white varietals. Yum! 2008 PreVail Back Forty, $85: Crafted from 100% hillside estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, this sexy, sumptuous wine is a perfect splurge! Mouthwatering aromas of black cherry, cassis, sandalwood and rose potpourri lead into a richly textured mouthful of consistent flavors that linger through the finish. Gorgeous! Visit Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery at 8761 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. For more information, call (707) 433-6700 or go to www.ferrari-carano.com.

Bike into Spring in Bucolic Dry Creek Valley with Dutcher Crossing Winery Proprietor Debra Mathy
Free and open to all levels; 9 am the last Friday of each month
After a long, rainy winter, bike into spring, touring the vibrant scenery of Dry Creek Valley with Debra Mathy, an avid cyclist and proprietor of Dutcher Crossing Winery. A bike is always my first choice of transportation, said Mathy. I would like to invite anyone with a bike to join me on a scenic tour of the northern valley vineyards. Starting at Dutcher Crossing Winery at the juncture of Dry Creek Road and Dutcher Creek Road, Mathy will lead a casual ride through the valleys verdant vineyards from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the last Friday of each month through October 28, 2011. A lover of bicycles since childhood, Debras last gift from her late father was a vintage high-wheel bicycle, showcased on all of Dutcher Crossing Winery wine labels. The icon represents Dutcher Crossing Winerys pursuit of small-lot winemaking, attesting to the guiding power of my fathers imagination, and the timeless qualities of an artisan approach to life, she explained. A replica of the high wheeler graces the tasting room, and on occasion, is actually ridden by Debra to the enjoyment of her guests. For information about the Ride with Deb, contact Debra by

The winery farms biodynamically as a way to work in harmony with the land and nature. Our family feels that a biodynamic approach brings you a wine which is a true expression of our sense of place, spring-fed mountain vineyard and volcanic soils, explain Tracey and Mitch Hawkins. Hawk and Horse Vineyards has been Demeter-certified since 2008 and California Certified Organic (CCOF) since 2004. The ranch is the home to a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle, three American Saddlebred horses, five American Quarterhorses and an enormous range of wildlife from Red Tail hawks to bees, owls, bear, wild boar, bobcats, mountain lions and squirrels. Bird-watching brings glimpses of woodpeckers, bluebirds, herons, ducks and more. The ranch encompasses 1,300 acres, straddling elevations up to 2,200 feet and slopes of 15% to 85%. The property includes a plaque documenting the historical location of El Roble Grande, the largest Valley Oak ever recorded in California. The 18 acres of vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon (15 acres), with Petite Sirah (1 acre), Cabernet Franc (1 acre) and Petit Verdot (1 acre) also part of the mix. The soils are rocky, red volcanic types Aiken, Collayomi, and Whispering loam. Unusual for most visitors to notice is that the soil literally glitters, due to the abundance of Lake County diamonds, tiny quartz fragments which are the remnants of volcanic activity from nearby Mt. Konocti, a now dormant volcano.
