Background
0 A rite of passage marks a time when a person reaches a

new and signiCicant change in his/her life. It is something that nearly all societies recognize and often hold ceremonies for. These ceremonies are held to observe a person's entry into a new stage of life and can be anything from a high school graduation ceremony or a birthday party, to a funeral. Most rites help people to understand their new roles in society.

0 Most rites of passage fall into three main phases:

separation, transition, and incorporation. phase. There are many, many rites of passage in our lives. Some are considered to be more signiCicant than others, but almost every day we live can bring about transitions :Birth, Leaving childhood and becoming an adolescent, Leaving home, Weddings, and Death/ Funerals

0 To recognize these signiCicant times in our lives,

societies typically hold elaborate ceremonies. Each different culture or society may choose to mark these rites in very different ways. Each ceremony is unique and meaningful to one's own culture.

LAND DIVERS
0 The Pentecoast Leap 0 The origins of Bungee jumping may come from Vanuatu, a small island in the middle of

the South PaciCic.

0 Around April or May, villages will build crude wooden towers reaching heights of 100

feet or more. After the tower is completed, a few men will volunteer to scale it. The men then tie a vine around their ankles and with great courage they jump.

0 The goal of the jump is to land close enough to the ground that the divers shoulders

touch the ground. Any miscalculation on the length of the vine means either serious injury or death. 0 Land diving among the Vanuatus goes back nearly 15 centuries. It is a rite of passage to initiate the tribes boys into manhood. The boys start out jumping low, but will work their way up as they get older. The higher a man goes, the manlier he is considered by the tribe.
