At the time of this trip about seventy per cent (705&) of the units visited were on the B Ration. The ration is very well received and soldiers had few criticisms to offer. Although the troops, were being issued about 12 pounds of coffee per 100 men every three days, there were many requests for additional Oof fee. This in creased demand has been partly due to the cold wet weather. Coffee is an excellent morale factor and stimulant for- front-line troops.

1^ ft Nation

Nation The troops have been receiving small* quantity of the new combinations of the C Ration. The troops- like the variety; it ' ' has relieved the monotony of 0 rations.

cK^- I*has been suggested that more chewing tobacco be adde&'to the E4C Kit, One Division Quartermaster suggested that the number of plugs be increased t 0 twenty pieces; At present, the BAC contains four plugs. Infantry soldiers are unable to smoke when in the line and enjoy chewing tobacco. Field artillery soldiers manning large caliber guns are not permitted to smoke; they also request chewing tobacco. . :

(1) Shoes, Service, Type 111, Reversed Upper The diffi culty encountered with this type of shoe is that it absorbs water in spite of the number of times the shoes are dubbed. Individuals have used the regular dubbing, Ueets Poet oil, regular motor oil, and combinations of these items and ? still have failed to keep water from soaking tnrough the leather. Please note that it has been raining almost dally for the past thirty days. (2) Boots, Combat, Reversed Upper Hot enough of the troops in this area had combat boots, reversed upper, to secure pertinent comments as to the relative merits of this item. 0) Sloves, Wool, 0.D., Leather Palm Armored unit supply officers suggested a leather glove with a lining like the gloves, horse hide, riding, lined. It is believed purpose^hae been accomplished by standardization of gloves, leather shell, and liner for same. (U) Raincoat, Synthetic, Resin-coated, 0.33, Hjsmounted -. 3?hls' item is the least accepted item of clothing among conbat troops, who had, the following constructive criticisms to offer:

legs become wet from knees down. b) Absorbs water across shoulders and back. c) Sweats on insjjde. d) .Leaks . at Seams ,

To eliminate the shortcomings the following improvisations: of this raincoat, many soldiers have made

Wear the raincoat inside out, "because it sheds "water "better. 15) Add a strip to "bottom of raincoat to protect lower portion of legs. c) 'Wear the overcoat in preference to raincoat to
keep dry. Approximately ninety per Overcoat, Field, Officers cent (90$) of the officers interviewed wore this type of a coat as a raincoat, "because it kept them warm and fairly dry. The second choice of raincoat was the G-.1, raincoat. The officers who used the G-.1, rain they wished to "be dressed the same as their enlisted men during coat said and IV officer, Third Army, had the combat activities. (l) Tent, Shelter, Half, Double End

- Generally

speaking,

this new type shelter half is very well received, for it is warnier and roomier. However, both favorable and unfavorable comments had been received regarding its ability to shed water. It was found tfrat the dark
green-colored shelter half was made of a heavier cloth and shed water very well; whereas, the khaki-colored shelter half was made of a lighter material and did not shed water too well. This shelter half is still ; preferred to the old type shelter half, . .

A suggestion offered was that if a 6" wall was added to the new type shelter half it .would provide additional room and reduce the possibility of the occupants touching it during rainy weather, causing It to leak.

(2.) Stoye, Cooking, Gasoline, Qne~Burner , ~ Armored units suggest a revision of the '2/O&B to provide more cooking stoves, one-burner for their units. Currently they are provided cne stove, cooking, gasoline} one-burner* per vehicle, and this has been inadequate. For example, a I halftrack contains from twelve to fourteen men and these men must use this one-burner stove to do all their cooking.' fhe experience of the ij.th and 6th Armored Divisions has been that, in combat, they must eat by tank crews, and halftrack groups, and -are unable to utipze their kitchens. Conse" quently, there is a definite need for a read;justment of the allotments of the stove, cooking, gasoline, one^burner. ".'■■"'■"■

X Ration In a period of 10 days the 3d Armored Division overdrew 66,000 X Ra tions. The men were eating nothing but X rations and were in contact with the enemy at the time. It was explained that the men were awake for long periods and felt the need of more than the allowed ration. Individuals would eat Ij., 5 and more units a day. The Ist Division also
overdrew on X rations. Every officer and enlisted man inter viewed suggested that additional coffee units be put in the
X ration. These could either be used at regular mealtime or at other' 'periods during ttie' day when they had' an opportunity
to make coffee*. As evidence of the desire for more coffee,
many men have written home asking that coffee rbe sent them.
Because of the fact? that troops are on the X rations for
several days at one time / it was suggested that the X rations;"
be given more variety V ft was found-; that ut/ith these men
the Breakfast Unit was T the most popular,- Dinner Unit next* and
Supper Unit third. The man favored the light cracker over the dark in the X ration.

Initial issue and replacement factors for Class I\TSupplies are subject , to constant change as data from various theaters of operation is cojnpiled. The OCQM, ETOTJS& periodically issues new lists of factors to reflect these changes* Reference should be made to such lists, since ! is not feasible to * it. reprint Volume. The factors listed in this publication are based on .the allpwances listed Requirements Table A-2 20 November 1944 published by the OQMG < and modified in certain instances where the factors for this theater are known, to be different from those shown by the OQMG,' These items, are marked with an \u26 6 (a) on the left hand margin. This table includes mandatory initial, allowances, of clothing #nd equipment authorized in T/E 21 dated 1 June 1944. and in the applicable T/0 & ,E*s, T/BVb and SLOE's for the troops in this theater, but does not include special projects or operational stock piles*. Heavy tentage for ♦" housing has not been included,
in the Overseas

..

t'

Some misunderstanding has existed in the past concerning the approved use of these factors. In order that this difficulty may be eradicated, the following^specific explanations are given:

'

'

1. These allowances are calculated on the actual troop basis of * ' the Theater, i.e. on the combined T/E ! of all of , s the units presently assigned to the 3T0t Therefore, they do not pertain ' * to individual units and are not to be applied to field units
for requisitioning or editing purposes
2, Definitions: a * Initial Issue^per I*ooo Ind.

This column shows 'the total authorized T/S allowance" for a block of*l,ooo individuals * who can be considered representative of* the. Theater troop basis. In the case of individual clothing and equipment,, little variance willbe found between units in T/E allow ances, but in organizational equipment and regular supplies, the differences between authorized allowances for specific, be field units will substantial. When the latter factors are used, therefore, tho strength to which they are applied' must be largo enough to allow for a representation by all types of units included in the Theater troop basis. * Monthly % Replacement The replacement* ' factor shown in b. this column is a measure of the average monthly wastage * during the expected life of a piece of equipment expressed n Per cent. It includes losses due to 'wearing out, ea fu ture,, abandonment, pilferage and all other causes which re--' quire replacement of the item in the hands of troops.. c. 30 Day Replacement per lfoool f 000 Ind. This column shows the " expected- replacement of the item for 1,000 representative ' troops for a 30 day period, It is obtained by multiplying the initial issue per 1,000 individuals by the percent which is expected to wear out each month (Monthly % Re*-' placement), in order to set forth a quantity of ihe item that will,on the average, have to be replaced each month for 1,000 troops. The figure is not infallible, it will vary fromnpnth to month depending on the amount of wear * experienced by the item, the tactical situation, *and cilia' atic conditions, but it is a guide in estimating the quan tity required for replacement for large 'numbers of men op erating under normal Theater of Operations conditions.
