Itwasusedbrieflyforthemanufactureofcargoplanesandlater- duringtheKoreanconflict-forthebuildingoftankengines. ThreeprimaryfactorsinfluencedtheselectionofMichoud:Itoffered severalexistingbuildings,includinga43-acremanufacturingbuild- ing;
it
wasaccessiblebywater,necessaryinransportinglargerocket stages;andsparselyinhabitedlandwasavailablenearbyforastatic testingsite.The900-acreMichoud AssemblyFacilityislocatedonatriangular tract15mileseastofdowntownNewOrleansoffU.S.Route90. SupportservicestoallNASA-contractorelementsoperatingat MichoudareprovidedbythefirmofMason-Rust.Theseservices include:Transportation,security,fireprotection,photography, medical,food,supply,communications,custodial,plantengineering andmaintenance,messengerandmail,reproductionandutilities.
