Background
0 A rite of passage marks a time when a person reaches a

new and signiCicant change in his/her life. It is something that nearly all societies recognize and often hold ceremonies for. A person enters into a new stage of life. It can be a high school graduation ceremony or a birthday party, or a funeral. 0 Most rites help people to understand their new roles in society.

0 Most rites of passage fall into three main phases:

separation, transition, and incorporation phase.

0 There are Cive rites of passage in our lives:Birth,

Leaving childhood and becoming an adolescent, Leaving home, Weddings, and Death/Funerals.

0 To recognize these signiCicant times in our lives,

societies typically hold elaborated ceremonies. Each different culture or society chooses to mark these rites in very different ways. Each ceremony is unique and meaningful to one's own culture.

LAND DIVERS
The Pentecoast Leap
0 The origins of Bungee jumping may come from Vanuatu, a small island

in the middle of the South PaciCic.

0 The villages build wooden towers reaching heights of 35 or 40 meters.

After the tower is completed, a few men volunteer to scale it. The men then tie a vine around their ankles and jump.

0 The goal of the jump is to land close enough to the ground that the

divers shoulders touch the ground. Any miscalculation on the length of the vine means either serious injury or death. 0 Land diving among the Vanuatus goes back nearly 15 centuries. It is a rite of passage to initiate the tribes boys into manhood.
