In 2007 and 2006 President Bush acquiredunprecedented dictatorial powers. By simply declaringan emergency he can take over both Congress and theJudiciary (May 9, 2007 Homeland Security PresidentialDirective 20 and National Security Presidential Directive51). He killed the Bill of Rights with a law that can seizean American citizen without charge and hold peopleindefinitely (October 17, 2006 Military Commissions Act).He has proven that torture and extraordinary renditionsare now standard practices.Consider the case of Jose Padilla. As a US citizen, hehad a right against forced self-incrimination but this rightdisappeared when President Bush declared him anenemy combatant. As a result he was tortured withsevere isolation, sleep deprivation, forced hypothermia, bright lights, and sounds blasted through headphones. Not even his lawyer was allowed to see him for twoyears. In the process he lost his mind. Perhaps the factthat he was tortured is why the security personnel inphotographs with him appear wearing dark sunglassesor face shields.Even working for the withdrawal of American soldiers from Iraq couldresult in severe penalties under the Blocking Property of CertainPersons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq Executive Ordersigned by President Bush on July 17, 2007.Together with the Patriot Act Reauthorization, Warner Act, ADEX, Rex84, TALON, and Endgame, the dark side of the Bush administration canbe seen.To understand the collection of new laws, remember President GeorgeBush's statement, “you're either for us, or you're against us.” The newlaws beg the question as to what he means by “us.” Former AttorneyGeneral John Ashcroft was clear on this point in 2002 when heannounced a desire to see camps for US citizens deemed to be "enemycombatants."For many years, federal plans for concentration camps, the roundup ofdissidents, the takeover of local governments, and secret police tofacilitate martial law have long been dismissed as “conspiracy theories.”Unfortunately, the 2006 Military Commissions Act and the John WarnerNational Defense Authorization Act make the impossible very possible.
