MEET
PREVIEW
Paul Short
InvitationalFor the past four weeks the UMBC Men
’s
Cross Country team hasmaintained a ranking within the Mid-Atlantic poll, and battled with the elitein the area.
“We have definitely made progress this year in that we are
shortening the gap between us and the Top Five in the region,
” said Coach
Gittermann.
“With both of these first two meets kind of being trial runs, it
isgoing to be interesting to see what they are capable when we let them gofor it.
” This week they travel to the Paul Short Invite where they will be
competing in the Gold Race which is almost entirely comprised of Top 25Nationally and Regionally ranked teams. The Retrievers have been led byBrandan McGee and Sam Boimov who both have recorded the fastest timesfor UMBC athletes ever at the Mount St. Mary
’s Invite and Navy Invites
respectively.The UMBC Women
’s
Cross Country has been displaying a differentflavor than recent years, with seven girls in the mix as opposed to a couplelead runners. Coach Gittermann revealed
“that once the women’s team
competes in the manner they have been practicing, we should be able to getthe six girls after Keri across the line in ten seconds or less.
” So
far this yearKeri Wilson has led the Lady Retrievers across the line, setting personal besttimes for each course. She has been backed up by a rotating crew of runners, all of who appear poised to make a big jump in progress on the faster courseat the Paul Short Invite. The women
’s team will take part in the Brown Race

“This will be a good test for our women in this race. We should
be aiming for top five against this competition and focusing on runningpersonal best times in the process.
