RRC Recommendations from the Safety & Infrastructure Committee
8/10/11Infrastructure Improvements:
1. Complete sidewalk resurfacing and ramp improvements.It is clear as we near the sidewalk resurfacing completion associated with theSewer and Drain Water initiative that the new brick chosen is easier to cleanand configured such that litter and cigarette butts do not get stuck in betweenthe bricks. Additionally we see improved ramps from the sidewalk to thestreet which should be done for every ramp in the square.2. Carl Barron Plaza - Several Opportunities in Carl Barron PlazaCreate a plan that provides a multi-purpose use of CBP, for example:
o
Create a platform that invites food vendors into this part ofCentral Square.
o
Create a platform that invites organized street entertainmentinto this area.Coordinate having the MBTA bus stops redistributed throughout theSquare to eliminate them from Carl Barron Plaza.Resurface Carl Barron Plaza (CBP) and the MBTA Island so that it is acontiguous area in the absence of the bus stops.3. Monitor and advocate for the MBTA elevator replacement initiative inCentral Square. Add electricity to the circled T sign in Central Square.Replace and improve lighting fixtures at all T entrances and bus stations.
Safety and lighting
1. Lighting ImprovementLighting improvement is a direct correlate to reducing nuisance behavior. Lightstudies are underway to compare to established public lighting standards. Wewould like to see new lighting and additional poles added to the Square and tokey approaches to the Square, including River Street and Prospect. This willinclude underground infrastructure for new lights added, possibly new polesalthough we would explore improved fixtures first if the existing poles could be

maintained; if not, we would continue with the lighting esthetics of Jill Brown-Rhone Park.Improve the lighting in the alley way to public parking lot #5.Improve the private parking lot lighting on Green Street between Riverand the Post OfficeImprove the lighting in University Park by the Fire Station.2. Ensure that the new design of the old Police Station include a first floor 24hour police report writing station.3. Determine resources necessary to maintain current level of securityassets in Central Square. OR { Maintain stability of safety resourcesthrough continued collaborative efforts between the City and business.}

Increase the frequency of power washingand expand the effort to include public parking lots and new technologiesto address tougher stains.2. Secure a regimented maintenance program from NSTAR and the PostOffice for transfer boxes and mailboxes, lighting boxes and electrictransfer boxes.3. Add recycling containers to the Big Belly Installations to promote publicarea recycling.4. Monitor and advocate for the MBTA elevator replacement initiative inCentral Square. Add electricity to the circled T sign in Central Square.Replace and improve lighting fixtures at all T entrances and bus stations.5.
