Explore Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Nature Reserve in Vietnam
“Phong Nha
-Ke Bang National Park is of high conservation value as one of the largest areas of
intact forest habitat remaining in Vietnam.”
Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a national park in the central of Quang Binh province in north-centralVietnam It. It is located in the middle of the Annamite Mountain Range, 40km from Dong Hoi,500 km from Hanoi capital, and near to the Vietnam - Laos boundary just several kilometers tothe west.Quang Binh Province has invested into upgrading the Phong Nha-Ke Bang visitor place to turn itinto one of Vietnam's major traveller destinations. Phong Nha - Ke Bang protects one of theworld's two largest karst regions with several hundred caves and grottoes.Phong Nha is by far the best and most natural with the unique rock formations. The Phong NhaKe Bang National Park has a system of natural and uniquely interesting water grottoes and iscovered with thick jungle, as well as abundant wildlife and plants. Its name derives from PhongNha cave, the most beautiful one, with numerous fascinating rock formations, and Ke Bangforest. The plateau is probably one of the finest and most distinctive examples of a complex karstlandform in Southeast Asia. The Park is also recognized by UNESSCO as a World Natural
Heritage Site under the name “Phong Nha Nature Reserve."
The site is divided into 03 functional regions: the strictly protected region: 64.984 ha, theecological rehabilitation areas: 17.449 ha, the administration service areas: 3.4114 ha. PhongNha is part of unique set of cave systems in the world in that it has a subterranean river flowingthrough the cave and out and the river is navigable by boat. This allows the visitor a unique experience to sit in a boat and either paddle or cruise through thecave while admiring the experience. A short drive brings you to Phong Nha, which is a pleasantplace to walk among the mountains. The cave is about 5 miles deep but the boat will take you less than a mile, and then you get towalk in dry caves looking at the rock formations. The area is considered a paradise forresearchers and explorers of grottoes and caves, and Vietnamese and British scientists have sofar surveyed 20 with a total length of 70km. Of them, 17 are in the Phong Nha area and three inthe Ke Bang area.Looking into the caves, you may identify discrete episodic sequences of events, leaving behindvarious levels of fossil passages, formerly buried and now uncovered paleokarst(karst fromprevious, maybe very archaic periods of solution); evidence of major changes in the routes of underground rivers; changes in the solutional regime; deposition and later re-solution of giantspeleothems and unusual features such as sub-aerial stromatolite.
