In the month of spring, I managed to make a trip to winter Yes, you guessed it Cape Town. And then cold, cold Cape Town decided to warm up just about the moment I left! On my trip to the Cape I spent some valuable time at YWAMs media training centre, Media Village. In my conversation with their CEO, it became quite clear that we share a very similar vision when it comes to media and our in uence in the industry, which is, for the most part, pretty corrupted. It is probably one of the loudest voices in the world today, and a powerful tool when it is in the hand of God. We want to see it redeemed. As part of our new media venture, we recently placed ourselves on the map, so to speak, by entering the 48 Hour Film Project. Basically, it is a short lm competition where the teams get only 48 hours to produce a short lm of between four and seven minutes. On the Friday evening at 19:00, all the teams received the same character, prop and script line that needed to feature in the lm. However, all the teams drew different genres comedy, drama, horror, silent lm, mockumentary, period piece, you-name-it They were all there. So our team, which we creatively named Ducksoup, drew DRAMA. The character was a chef Samuel/Samantha Khumalo. The prop was a set of keys and the script line was, Do you expect me to believe that?. And then we had 48 hours till cut o ! Planning, scripting, rehearsing, shooting, editing, composing the music, mastering, exporting and writing the movie onto a disc, drive to Johannesburg and hand it in. And as I was both one of the writers and the editor on the project, I didnt sleep at all After being awake for over 60 hours, you begin to forget words, like hand and co ee Im speaking from experience now. Long story short, our short lm, Eat (which now leaves most of its viewers teary-eyed), received two nominations and one award at the awards evening best use of character, best script and best editor. It was great fun, and well de nitely enter again next year!
