Every 69 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies5of breast cancer; every three minutes, a woman in the United States6is diagnosed with breast cancer; and every 13 minutes, a woman7loses her battle with the disease; and8

It is estimated that this year in the United States, 230,4809women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 39,520 will die10from breast cancer; and11

In New Jersey this year, an estimated 7,360 women will be12newly diagnosed with breast cancer, and 1,260 women will die13from breast cancer; and14

The “good news” is that breast cancer mortality has15decreased by two percent each year for the past decade due to16increased awareness, annual mammograms, earlier detection, and17more effective treatments; and, currently, there are 2,500,000 breast18cancer survivors in the United States alone - more survivors than19for any other type of cancer; and20

Each year, the month of October is observed nationwide as21“National Breast Cancer Awareness Month”; and22

The month of October in each year is designated as "Breast23Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey pursuant to24P.L.2005, J.R.7 (C.36:2-86); and25

Various organizations have provided, and are providing,26critical services to the people of this State relating to breast cancer,27including education and public awareness, preventive health,28assistance with care, counseling, social services, and advocacy, as29well as funding for innovative scientific research that is an essential30component of the war against cancer; and their ongoing efforts on31behalf of New Jerseyans are most laudatory and sincerely32appreciated by this House and all the citizens of New Jersey; and33

The efforts of these organizations have made a major34contribution to spreading breast cancer awareness to both women35and men in all communities in this State through outreach,36education, and screening programs, and have empowered women37with the life-saving message of early detection and the importance38of having annual mammograms; now, therefore,3940
