THE PATHFINDER

Little Valley United Methodist Church 109 Court Street, PO Box 221 Little Valley, NY 14755 (716) 938-6150 Joseph Pascoe, Pastor Office Hours: Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 Monthly Newsletter September 2011
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ: I am writing this letter to you from the nicely air conditioned living room of my brother, Davids home in Dallas Texas. The temperature outside today was only 112 at 5pm! I have a tendency at times to think about the grass on the other side of the fence. While home I was really wishing it were a little bit warmer and drier..then when we got here, well thats right just a little bit cooler and some rain would have been great. That is all probably in part due to the fact that I am always going. I have a hard time stopping all movement for any extended period of time. Is our relationship with Jesus at all like this scenario? Do we have a tendency to continually be asking him for something more, wishing things were a little different in our very busy lives? Does it matter if it is better health or more wealth, or maybe we arent really happy with the way something is going at work or even at church. It doesnt matter who we are, it seems we all go through seasons where we are seeking something different. We all can be so busy we cant even see what it is that God is doing with us and for us right where we are. Early in scripture God gives us ten simple rules to follow. As I recall it is in Exodus chapter 20 verse 8 where He says to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. God knows that we are in great need of a time of renewal. That renewal needs to happen weekly, but also for extended periods of time throughout the year. At times we can become so busy and distracted by all that we are doing, we can forget all that God has given to each of us. Renewal is a time when you can remove the distractions of life and berenewed. Allowing God to transform you and bring you back to the beautiful creation that He has called and designed you to be. It is so important that we stop moving at times and just listen. Over the next month take a little time out of your busy schedules and find time for Jesus. He wont disappoint you, in fact He might even be able to give you the very important break that you need so that you can come back renewed and energized! Until next month, lighten up and live. Your soon to be renewed pastor, Pastor Joe

So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anothers feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. John 13:12-17 NKJV

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Building a Heart of Faith

The leadership team will meet on August 29th at 7:00 for a season of prayer as we begin another Sunday school year. There will be some changes in leaders/helpers that will soon be complete. Sunday school will begin September 18th at 9:15 a.m. Childrens worship continues to meet for those age 4 thru 2nd grade. In Christs love, Becky Cable CE Coordinator 543-5050 Adult S.S. Class: What does it mean to seek first the kingdom in our relationships, values, ambitions, finances and commitment to God? Jesus' answer to these questions amazed those who first heard the Sermon on the Mount. In the fall semester of Sunday School, we will be studying this exciting portion of scripture found in Matthew 5-7. We will be using a study guide written by John Stott and his book titled, "The Message of the Sermon on the Mount" to aid our discussion. The Eagle's small group will resume meeting on Tuesday, September 13th & 27th at 6:45 p.m. The DC young adult small group members have been meeting sporadically to hang out and have been enjoying the summer break so far. We plan to officially start back up in the fall with the other small groups. If you are interested in joining or may know someone who is interested, or you are looking for information on the DC small group, please contact Sean Andrew. Navigator's 2:7 Discipleship Class meets every Thursday in the Adult S.S. room. The class consists of 6 people who have committed the next 7 months of training in particular spiritual disciplines which will allow them to "know Christ and make Christ known". The class is led by Jon Cable. While we can't take new-comers to the class at this time, we ask for your prayers as these students learn, grow, and become trained in Bible memorization, Bible study, preparing personal testimonies, learning to share the gospel in a clear, and understandable way, becoming regular in Bible reading, and other spiritual practices which will lead towards spiritual transformation. Unfortunately, this class is closed, but once we are done next February, I will begin planning for the next class which will begin fall of 2012. Maybe you will want to be in that class when it happens. Pray about it and talk with Jon if you have any questions about what we are doing or about information regarding being in the next class.

PRAISES
Praise be to God for the beautiful summer we have had. We were a little worried at first, but we finally had some rain when we needed it most. The days have been warm and sunny and gardens have done well. It sounds like the lawn sale in August once again was a success. It was rumored that sales began as usual, while things were still being set up on Saturday. As you can see, this is something that people remember and look forward to each year. Thanks to Bonnie for hosting us all these years and to Bill and all the many helpers who have spent endless hours into organizing, ministering and cleaning up each year. Dont forget to keep all the children, parents, teachers and school staff in your prayers each and every day throughout the coming year. Education is one of the most important things you can earn and will be used for the rest of your lives.

ACOLYTE TRAINING Parents of Acolytes, who have not done a refresher session with Al and Bobbie Jo in the last couple of months, please see Bobbie Jo to set one up as soon as possible. There are some things that need to be reviewed with all interested children in grades 2nd through 5th. We would like to have a final session if necessary on Sunday September 11th starting at 9:00 am before church for those who have not yet done this. We would like to have everyone go through this before Sunday School resumes in the fall.

CLOTHES CLOSET
Here it is almost back to school time for the kids, seems like they just got out of school. I know every month we say we are busy, but thats because we have people in looking for clothes every day we are open & right now they are looking for school clothes for the kids. We are in need of all mens, womens, boys & girls youth & kids clothes; we can use sneakers that are in good condition, we also can use boys baby clothes. Its also getting to the time that hats, mittens & gloves will be in demand. Thank you all for your faithfulness to this outreach mission. Please when bringing items in make sure they are clean.

I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. You asked Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. Job 42:1-3 NIV
Deposit Bottles and Cans Dont forget, if you hate the messy job of taking back your returnable cans and bottles, donate them to the youth and let them do it. Every little bit will help and they add up fast. It will help them raise money for their activities. Did you know water and juice bottles now have a deposit on them?

Puppy Size (from the internet)

This is one of the neatest stories you will ever hear. You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end (you'll want to share this one with your loved ones and special friends)! 'Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this,' the mother told the volunteer. 'What is it she keeps asking for?' the volunteer asked. 'Puppy size!' replied the mother. 'Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for.' 'I know... we have seen most of them,' the mom said in frustration... Just then Danielle came walking into the office. 'Well, did you find one?' asked her mom. 'No, not this time,' Danielle said with sadness in her voice. 'Can we come back on the weekend?' The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed. 'You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a supply,' the volunteer said. Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door. 'Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend,' she said. Over the next few days, both Mom and Dad had long conversations with her. They both felt she was being too particular. 'It's this weekend or we're not looking any more,' Dad finally said in frustration. 'We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size, either,' Mom added. Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs. Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted. Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, 'Sorry, but you're not the one.' It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer. 'Mom, this is it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!' She screamed with joy. 'It's the puppy size!' 'But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks, 'Mom said. 'No, not size...The sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,' she said. 'Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh!' The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both. 'Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,' she said. Then, holding the puppy up close to her face, she said, 'Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!' Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day. They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear. 'Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.' I hope your life is filled with Sighs!!!
