Semua soal harus dikembalikan bersama dengan lembar jawaban. ---------------------------------------------------READING COMPREHENSION Read the following four passages and choose the one best answer to the corresponding questions accordingly. TEXT 1 Earthquakes are the most lethal of all natural disasters. What causes them? Geologists explain them in terms of a theory known as plate tectonics. Continents are floating apart from each other; this is referred to as the continental drift. About sixty miles below the surface of the sea, there is a semimolten bed of rock over which plates, or slabs, carry continents and sea floors at a rate of several inches a year. As the plates separate from each other, a new sea floor is formed by the molten matter which was formerly beneath. Volcanic islands and large mountain ranges are created by this type of movement. The collision of plates causes geological instability such as that in California called the San Andreas Fault, located between the Pacific and North American plates. The plates there are constantly pushing and pulling adjacent plates, thereby creating constant tremors and a potential for earthquakes in the area. Geologists would like to be able to predict earthquakes accurately. Using laser beams, seismographs, gravity measuring devices, and radio telescopes, they are presently studying the San Andreas Fault to determine the rate of strain and the amount of ground slippage. Calculations indicate that sometime within the next ten years, California will be struck by a major earthquake. 1. Continental drift is the concept that (A) continents are drawing nearer to each other (B) continents are separating (C) continents are 60 miles apart from each other (D) new continents are developing beneath the sea 2. Geologists have been able to predict an earthquake (A) with correct accuracy (B) within months (C) by measuring tremors (D) by knowing about continental drift 3. Volcanic islands are formed by (A) the separation of plates and the consequent uncovering of the molten sea floor beneath them (B) the constant pushing and pulling of adjacent places (C) constant tremors (D) huge mountain ranges 4. Geologists are using modern technology because (A) it helps them predict earthquakes (B) it will enhance their reputations (C) it is required to measure the accuracy of earthquakes (D) it will control ground slippage 5. If predictions are correct, California (A) should be prepared for a dangerous earthquake in the next decade (B) will be saved from an earthquake within ten years (C) is unstable as a result of the San Andreas Fault (D) has nothing to fear

TEXT 2

Chemical substances, which are not involved in the process of respiration, and are not excreted, may become highly concentrated as they pass through each step of the food. If radioactive materials with long half-lives enter the food chain, the high concentration, which accumulate in successive steps, may lead to serious health risks. The radioactive isotope cesium 137, a product of nuclear fission, has a half-life of 30 years. Once it enters the body and is contained within food, it becomes distributed throughout the bodys cells, accumulating two- or threefold during each step in the food chain. Evidence of this phenomenon was discovered by studies carried out in the Mackenzie bay region of the Yukon in Canada where above-ground nuclear testing in the 1950s introduced large quantities of cesium 137 to the atmosphere. Rain caused the isotope to fall to earth, where lichens growing in tundra areas collected it. Tests on lichen samples showed evidence of 6 micromicrocuries of cesium per gram per tissue. The lichens form the principal diet of caribou, whose meat is the staple diet of the Inuit peoples who inhabit the region. The caribou were found to have accumulated around 14 micromicrocuries of cesium per gram of tissue. 6. What does the passage mainly discuss? Radioactive materials with long half-lives. Chemical substances involved in the process of respiration. How radioactive materials can cause harmful effect. The discovery of lichens in the 1950s 7. It can be inferred from the passage that serious health risks are caused by Food chain variation High concentration of chemical substances Accumulation of chemical substances Entering radioactive materials with long half-lives to the food chain 8. How could cesium 137 get down to the ground after having been released to the atmosphere?. Lichens growing in tundra areas attracted it Tests were carried out on it. Accumulation caused the fall Rain brought it down 9. The word it in line 5 (typed in bold) refers to . A product Nuclear The radioactive isotope cesium 137 Fission (B) (C) (D) (E) 10.The word staple in line 11 (typed in bold) is closest in meaning to . Main Additional Sufficient Varied

TEXT 3
To most of us watching televisions or reading newspapers seldom get news that there is a work accident at a certain place. Actually it can be more than one accidents happening in the world every week. Every accident, of course , causes the fall of the victims. Estimating the exact number of the victims is difficult but every year thousands of people in the world are wounded or bruised when they are at work. Every accident, of course, causes hardship to the victim and his family. Some of the accidents are fatal and some of them are serious. Fatal Accidents are accidents resulting death. Serious accidents are accidents making people badly bruised. Both fatal and serious accidents usually occur because the workers are careless in their work or work without obeying the safety rules. The greatest number of these accidents is generally in factories. However, construction or building work is more dangerous. For every 100.000 construction workers, eighteen die every year in accident at work. For the same number of factory workers, there are four deaths per year. Most of the accidents often take place during lifting and handling of materials. Some of them are caused by machinery and falls are another main cause. To prevent these accidents, the workers are instructed to follow the safety rules and provide themselves with special equipment and clothing. 11.In the world news, work accident is (A) a popular topic (B) a non popular topic (C) rarely informed (D) often informed 12.
