THEDERIVATIVE Thederivativeofafunctionisoneofthemostpowerfultoolsinmathematicsandtheappliedsciences.The definitionofthederivativecanbeapproachedintwodifferentwaysthatyoualreadyseeinmathclass.One isgeometrical(asaslopeofacurve)andtheotheroneisphysical(asarateofchange).Historicallythere was(andmaybestillis)afightbetweenmathematicianswhichofthetwoillustratestheconceptofthe derivativebestandwhichoneismoreuseful.Wewillnotdwellonthisandwilldefinethederivativeand discussmanypropertiesassociatedwiththisimportantconcept.Ouremphasiswillbeontheuseofthe derivativeasatool.
