We are nearing the end of five Mayan ages of supposedly roughly equal length. As the lastone was c. 5125 years, this suggests a time period for five ages together lasting between 25and 26,000 years, which has been identified with the
Great Year
cycle.Other ancient cultures marked the Great Year by noting that the constellation rising over theSpring Equinox gradually shifts. In 72 years there will have been a 1° change. In about 2,160years a whole constellation will have precessed past the March 21 point, in c. 25,920 years aGreat Year circuit will be complete. At present we are near the end of the age of Piscesbeginning the transition to the Age of Aquarius because these are the constellations near theSpring or Vernal Equinox on March 21 each year, just over 2000 years ago we were at thetransition from the Age of Aries to the Age of Pisces.Though these changes are usually marked using the equinoxes one can also use the solsticesas the main markers to divide the solar year. The constellation backdrop appears to moveagainst the solar year markers. The constellation area related to the Galactic Centre appears tomove too. Based on this system of constellation precession against fixed equinoxes, solsticesand related signs the Galactic Centre will move once around the twelve signs passing over theequinoxes and solstices in one Great Year.Of course this movement of the constellations is only apparent and more accurate would be tosee the ecliptic with its solstice and equinox markers, and the twelve sun signs we use inbetween these, as gradually moving in relation to the fixed constellation backdrop.However, the important thing to understand now is that the
winter solstice
point on theecliptic, the point that marks the solar year cycle, because of a relative motion caused b theEarth’s wobble, is now aligning with the
Galactic Centre

-Centre area associated with the Bull Taurus and the Man Orion is aligning withthe Summer Solstice.This alignment was considered to have major transformational effects upon the Earth.For a very long time the Mayan priests recorded the changes in relationship between theGalactic Centre area and the solstice and equinox markers of the Sun’s passage.

The Galactic Centre, usually said to be a black hole in Sagittarius A is not exactly on the ecliptic but close to it.The area that is said to conjunct the Solstice in 2012 is a rather wider area close to the Galactic Centre referred toas the Dark Rift. Astrologically speaking the Galactic Centre is 3° from the exact conjunction to the wintersolstice at present, while the galactic axis has already made its most exact conjunction in 1998, which is why Ispeak of the “Galactic Centre area” so as not to encourage the hair-splitters.

Of course there was a pragmatic element to all this study, and to the sometimes obliquelanguage of the myths built around it, which may suggest that our understanding of the GreatYear cycle is by no means perfect, that precession is not always of the same speed and thatthere are in fact moments in history that can pounce upon us, when sudden violent changes dooccur.Much evidence suggests that these jolting “moments” are triggered by alignments between theaxis of the Milky Way galaxy and the equinox and solstice markers on the ecliptic aboutevery 6000 to 6,500 years. This knowledge had been passed down to Plato, as also toother learned men, by the Greek Solon, who had visitedEgypt and asked the Egyptian priests of Sais.But what could cause such a sudden shift of the Earth?Certainly a celestial element is likely. One important part of the language in Raphael’s painting is given in color andgesture. Aristotle’s hand is moving downward and he iswearing blue like water, water naturally falls. Plato is wearing red and his finger is raised: fireis red and fire rises. It is of course no accident that this hand gesture was called the “
Finger of Fire”.
The same use of color and gesture can be found in

by Leonardo daVinci and in many other works.Seeing the two figures together it is as if we are being reminded of a cycle, with a fallingelement suggested on the right by the blue and a rising element by the red on the left, like Yinand Yang. Of course we are being reminded of this: the daily, yearly and Great Yearly cyclefollows a pattern based on Yin and Yang.But does this raised hand suggest more? Where does fire rise from?
