The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Stage One: The Egg

Butterfly eggs look different from any other type of egg. They can be brown, red, blue, green, and yellow. They come in many different shapes also. The shells are decorated with lines and dots that can only be seen by a microscope. The mother butterfly attaches her eggs to a leaf of twig with a natural glue.

Stage two: The Caterpillar


A caterpillar has six eyes on each side of its head. It has 12 sections. It has six real legs near the front of its body. It has fur. They are camouflaged. They eat a lot.

Stage Three: The Pupa Stage

The caterpillar changes into an adult butterfly. It spins silk around itself and forms a chrysalis. It stays very still for weeks or even months while it makes its wings and becomes a butterfly.

Stage Four: The Butterfly

Every part of the body is covered with thousands of scales. Body Parts:

Thorax (body part with wings connected to it) Abdomen (digestive and reproductive system) Antennae (used for smelling) Proboscis (a long tongue-like tube for sucking nectar) Two large eyes ( made of many lenses)

Presentation Requirements

Work in groups of four. Draw a picture on paper provided of each stage and find one fact about that stage and write it under the picture. Share your drawing and fact with your group and then design how each slide should look. Create a title slide and a slide for each stage of the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. Write at least two facts for each stage. Add pictures and use custom animation.
