Thereissomereason
to
fear
that
the
feeling.of
anyone
'who
may
examineindetailthiseditionandtranslationof
Varaha
Mihira's
astronomicalworkwill,in
the
firstplace,bewonder
at
the
boldnessof
the
editors.Iamindeedfullyconscious
that
on
the
imperfectmaterials
at
ourdisposal.aneditionin
the
strictsenseof
the
wordcannotbebased,
and
that
what
weareabletooffer
at
presentdeservesno
other
name
but
that
ofafirst
attempt
togiveageneralideaof
the
contentsof
the
Pafichasiddhuntika,
It
would,inthesecircumstances,possiblyhavebeenwisertodelayaneditionof
the
workuntilmorecorrectManuscriptshavebeendiscovered.Twoconsiderations,however,in
the
endinducedusnolongertokeepback
the
results,howeverimperfect,ofourlongcontinuedendeavourstorestoreandelucidate
the
text
of
the
Panchasiddhantika.
In
the
firstplacewe'wereencouragedby
the
consideration
that
texts
ofpurelymathematicalorastronomicalcon
tents
may,without
great
disadvantages,besubmittedtoamuchrougher
and
bolder
treatment
than
texts
of
other
kinds.

interestsusintheseworks,isalmostexclusivelytheir
matter,noteither
their
generalstyleor
the
particularwordsemployed;and
the
peculiar
nature
of
the
subjectoftenenablesustorestore
with
nearlyabsolute
certainty
the
generalmeaningofpassages
the
singlewordsofwhichare
pasttrustworthy
emendation.
And,
in
the
secondplace,wefeelconvinced
that
evenfrom
that
part
of
the
Pancha
siddhantikawhichweareabletoexplainmoreistobelearnedabout
the
earlyhistoryof
SanskritAstronomy
than
from
any
other
workwhich
has
comedownto
our
time.Imperfectandfragmentaryas
text
and
translationare,wemayassert
at
any
ratethat,
inourendeavours
to
overcome
the
quiteunusualobstacles,which
the
corruptandbare
text
of
the
Panchasiddhantikaopposesto
the
interpreter,wehavesparednotrouble.
The
timeand
thought,
devoted
tothe
presentvolume,would,I
may
say
without
exaggeration,have
amply
sufficedfor
the
editingandexplainingof
twenty
times
the
amountof
text'
presentingonlynormaldifficulties.
This
Imention,notofcourseinorder
to
extol
what
wehavebeenabletodo,
but
onlyasanexcusefor
what
weseeourselvesobliged
to
leaveundone.
Next
to
the
lamentable
state
of
the
text
asappearingin
the
two
Manu
scripts
at
ourdisposal,
thegreatest
disadvantage
under
whichwelabouredwas
the
absenceofaCommentary.Commentariescanbe
hardly
donewith
out
in
the
caseofany
Sanskrit
astronomical
work;
muchlessso,when
the
text,as
that
of
the
Panchaaiddhsntika,describesmanymathematicalpro
