Dear Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance,Forty-nine community members attended the Silver Lake Improvement Associationmeeting
on
Wednesday, September
24,2008.
They
represented a cross section
of
business merchants and rcsidents. Also
in
attcndance was LAPD, City
Attomey's
officc,
my
District Director Mitch O'Farrell. and Silver Lake Field Deputy, Ryan Carpio.
It
isunfortunate that the SJNA could not send representatives despite being stronglyencouraged to do so.Most
community
members voiced negative experiences with the Sunset Junction StreetFair and a frustration that they could not voice them to you, the organizers.
The,t,.
consensus was that the event was valuable to the community but that planning andexecution
of
the event should be done by someone other than the SJNA.
In
addition, themajority
of
these businesses and residents, by show
of
hands, indicated that they
would
like to have an event that
is
reflective
of
its original community atmosphere: particularly.one that is free
of
charge and returning
to
its original location.The Sunset Junction Street Fair has changed throughout the years but your responsibilityremains the same; build strong support for the event within the community. Closing anypublic right
of
way
is
a privilege and must not be taken for granted. I was disappointedto leam that
up
to the start
of
this
year's
event, there was an effort to exclude businessesalong Sunset between
Sanbom
and Edgecliffe. Furthem10re. merchants and employeeswithin the festival area were told they would have to pay an entrance fee
to
get to theirjobs. That
is
simply unacceptable under any circumstance.

have heard the outcry
of
thecommunity, and the experience
of
my
office
in
working with you has not been positive.
