Viruses are much smaller andsimpler in comparison to thesmallest of cells.Viruses cannot live without theirhost cell because they dependon it for growth andreproduction.The first viruses may haveevolved from the geneticmaterial of living cells, and havecontinued to evolve with themfor billions of years.Viruses are found whereverthere is life.Viruses do not form fossils.
Problems in looking for theOrigin of Viruses
The origin of viruses isunclear because they donot form fossils,so moleculartechniques have been usedto compare the DNA orRNA of viruses and are auseful means ofinvestigating how theyarose.Viruses may have aroseafter living cells wereformed because virusescannot survive without itshost cell.They may have evolvedfrom genetic material ofcells they infect.
