Rudyard Kipling wrote: “Oh, East is Eastand West is West, but never the twain shallmeet.” Though I hate to fault Kipling’s say-ing, if you’d attended one of the recent wed-ding celebrations of Connecticut-born-and-raised Pierre Rochman II and California-born-and-raised Helene Boyd, you’d havesee how tightly East and West have been joined together.Both the bride and the groom have largefamilies. Needless to say, it’s not easyto fly entire families across the country.The groom’s family, which is my fam-ily, is spread out all over Fairfield County— including Bridgeport, Trumbull, Shelton,Monroe, Milford, Huntington and Oxford.That is why the idea of having two weddingreceptions, one for each coast, became areality. Though the celebrations were verydifferent, they definitely doubled the plea-sure.The actual ceremony took place in LagunaBeach, Cal., on a terrace overlooking thePacific Ocean. Here, the bride and groomexchanged their vows. There are many tra-ditions in wedding ceremonies, includingthe lighting of a Unity Candle, and there arevariations on that tradition, including fami-lies or parents of both the bride and groomcoming together to light the candle. Todayit is common for the bride and groom tolight one large Unity candle from the flameof their smaller individual candles. Thissymbolizes the two people now unifiedin marriage, and the light of their candlesgrowing brighter together.My son and daughter-in-law chose a differ-ent symbolic tradition for their ceremony.In this instance, the bride poured whitewine into a large glass decanter, followedby the groom pouring red wine into thesame decanter. The officiant then lifted thedecanter and swirled it, mixing the twowines as surely as the two lives have cometogether. He then poured the combined

wines into the glasses of the bride andgroom, which the newlyweds drank, sym-bolizing the two coming together not onlyas one but as newly created and unique.As the parents of the groom, we didn’t havemuch to do with the planning of the wed-ding. However, the bride and groom keptmy husband and me informed of all theirplans and preparations. The bride evensent me photos of the gown she selected.Considering that she is the events plannerfor the Newport Dunes in Newport Beachand that our son is the production manag-er for the House of Blues in Anaheim, thetwo of them are experienced in arrangingevents for large groups. Happily, they han-dled all the West Coast reception prepara-tions, which were quite amazing.Like many of today’s couples, they havefriends from all over the world. Theirguests flew in from as far as Japan tobe a part of the celebration. Because somany guests were staying at the samehotel, the groom arranged for a party busto transport guests to the ceremony andthen to the reception. This party bus wasreally quite remarkable. Not only did ithave everything that you would find inan upscale club, but it also featured greatmusic and a light show.By the time we arrived at the country clubfor the reception, everyone was alreadyin a party mood. As guests made theirway to the assigned tables, they weregreeted by magnificent centerpieces oneach table. The long tubular glass vases,which stood about two-and-a-half-feet tall,featured a single long- stemmed, multiple-bloom orchid. The orchids complementedthe elements of the bride’s bouquet, whichfeatured stunning creamy-white orchids,bright bi-colored circus roses and brilliant-blue tubular flowers, adding the perfectaccent. The bottom of each centerpiecefeatured pebble-like translucent bulbs thatilluminated the orchids as the vivid orangesun set on the blue Western sky.After a delicious dinner, the bride’s favoritedrink was lined up on the bar — I mean,there had to be about 100 of these drinks.I didn’t see many people who didn’t haveone in hand, including the youngsters inattendance. The bride’s favorite drink, yousee, is not alcoholic — it’s a root-beerfloat! These yummy drinks stood foamingin tall crystal-clear mugs. What a treat! Itnearly upstaged the wedding cake, whichfeatured the couple’s new monogram.After the wedding, the couple honey-mooned in the Caribbean and returned toConnecticut for the East Coast reception.Since they didn’t have time to arrangefor two receptions, I happily took on thisresponsibility. Luckily, I was able to securea reception at our local country club, andthe dining-room manager helped selecteverything from appetizers to dessert.As for the centerpieces, my garden wasfull of big white and blue hydrangea.These large, full and fluffy flowers madeit easy to fill big blue bowls I purchased ata local department store. On one side of the room, which faced the guests, was alarge projection screen on which the WestCoast ceremony played continuously. Thisallowed the East Coast guests to enjoythe most important part of the weddingcelebration — the exchanging of weddingvows.Weddings are joyous occasions. Some cul-tures spend an entire week celebrating awedding. Two receptions seemed abso-lutely perfect. After all, this was when Eastwas joined to West in a happy and lovingcommitment.
The blending of red and white wine symbolize two coming together not only as one but as newly created and unique.
