In the 1860s the Central Pacific and Union Pacific were in intense competition to build the greartest mileage. Both used all imageinable tactics to advance their competitive advantage. As I researched "Railroad 1869, Along the Historic Union Pacific" I was astounded at the lengths their offcials would go to extend their influence. Eugene Arundel Miller, Mill Valley Ca.
