ESTIMATOR

DESCRIPTION:
Estimators determine the costs of various construction projects. Estimators work for construction companies, construction contractors or may be self-employed. Estimators may specialize in determining cost for structural, electrical, civil or mechanical construction projects.

Duties:
Prepare cost estimates of materials, labour and equipment for construction projects Manage and coordinate construction projects, schedules and contract negotiations Completing working payments and invoicing Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors Manage and co-ordinate construction projects, and prepare construction progress schedules

SKILLs:
Reading and interpreting documents to extract information Working with numbers to perform calculations Problem solving skills to provide solutions

EDUCATION:
Secondary school diploma Completion of a three-year college program in civil or construction engineering technology or several years of experience as a qualied tradesperson in construction

OVER THE NEXT 2 DECADES 40% OF NEW JOBS WILL BE IN SKILLED TRADES AND TECHNOLOGIES

SALARY: $34,400 to $82,300

In the Civil Engineering Technology diploma program you gain a balanced education in civil engineering theory, combined with practical work in laboratories and in the eld. Specialization takes place through a third-year major project. You become familiar with the structural properties of timber, steel, masonry and concrete and study the design of roads, water distribution and sewage and drainage systems. The major business aspects of civil engineering are also covered, as are technical communications skills.

You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
