Foundations of Energy

Wolf-Gerrit Früh
with
David Jenkins (tutorials)
Aims and Objectives

 To gain an overview over the range of topics relevant

for, and affected by, energy supply and consumption
 To become confident in basic energy calculations
 To acquire a qualitative and quantitative estimate of
current and projected energy consumption and its
implications
 To acquire knowledge about basic energy systems
and specific technologies

2 Autumn 2006 Foundations of Energy

3 Autumn 2006 Foundations of Energy

Tutorials

 David Jenkins will be available during the

tutorial classes to help with the exercises
 On days, when we have an industrial lecture,
he will introduce the speaker.
 Please note, that the time for the guest
lectures may change to accommodate the
industrial speaker

Webbased material and assessment

 As we have just moved over to a new web-

based learning-support package, everything
will be experimental and may not work well
(or at all…)
 As a result, the online exercises may have to
be organised as class tests or other course
work in weeks 3, 5, 7, and 9
 Having said that, I encourage you to use it as
much as possible
5 Autumn 2006 Foundations of Energy
Exam

 There will be a 2-hour exam on Friday, 5

January, 11.15 – 1.15
 The format will follow that of the example
exam in the module booklet.
 MSc students will have to answer questions
1 to 5
 MEng students will only have to answer
questions 1 to 4
6 Autumn 2006 Foundations of Energy
The debate

 The debate is for the postgraduate students only.

 This week, you will be divided into groups
 Within each group, one chair person and 4 speakers
will be identified. The others will be assistants to the
speakers during the preparation and audience during
the debate.
 Each group will carry out its own debate and produce
a report from that debate. This report will form the
basis for the assessment of the debate.
