Picking the most effective Silk Duvets
Is there a difference between a comforter and a duvet, or are they the same thing? A lot of people in theU.S. equate the two, but historically they’re not the same thing. From a traditional standpoint, duvetsare the sole covering a sleeping person uses, while a comforter is used in conjunction with a sheet. In Australia, duvet covers UKwere originally called “continental quilts,” and today they are oftenreferred to as “doonas.” Today, some Europeans call any thick blanket a duvet.Originally, a duvet’s filling was fashioned of down from the eider duck; “duvet” means “duck” in French.Today, of course, mattress toppercan be fashioned of goose down, duck down, feathers, syntheticmaterials, wool, cotton, silk or a combination of materials.Duvets filled with silk have the much-deserved distinction of being the most luxurious and comfy duvets. However, some industrial silk duvets don’t live up to that recognition.Silk cocoons can be obtained from the wild (tussah silk) or from domesticated plants (mulberry silk).Tussah silk comes from wild worms that eat oak leaves. Tussah cocoons are dark brown in colour andare coarse in texture. Tussah threads aren’t as springy as mulberry threads, and they have an unevensurface. Tussah material generally produces a coarse fabric that is suitable for curtains and bed spreads;but unfortunately, it's on occasion used to fillbed Linen UK.Silkworms raised solely on mulberry leaves produce mulberry silk. Mulberry silk cocoons are the colourof pearl. They are smoother, finer, rounder and smaller in shape than tussah cocoons. Mulberry silk flossis quite soft and is enriched with proteins and amino acids.Mulberry silk has a fine fibre and feels very delicate and extra soft to the touch. There is also a big difference between hand-extracted and machine-extracted silk.Hand-extracted silk is cleaned and stretched out by hand to form it into a cap-shaped silk net that isready for natural drying in the air, in partial shade. It is layered for use in duvets, trapping air betweenthe layers and guaranteeing a level dispersion of the duvet filling.
