Concerned Faculty for SURRENDER NOW!

While we congratulate Mike on his efforts to foster unity and collegiality by creating the appearance of an upsurge of antagonistic factions among the faculty at SIUC, we are concerned that he may compromise our concrete goals with his fuzzy-headed, if warm-hearted, idealism. We believe that a faculty movement for SURRENDER NOW! would more efficiently and completely achieve our most important objectives. Mikes decertification/replacement process is cumbersome, and leaves faculty with the confusing choice between no representation and no representation via the Faculty Senate. We put forward the below comparison of principles. If you find our plan even more appealing than Mike's, please join us by replying to our email. And as soon as we have a Facebook page, we will be happy to count you as a member if you "like," "share" or simply view our page. Don't worry if you have already signed on with Mike (even if you did so intentionally)--or with the FA--we are happy to have you. In fact, we expect Mike himself will shortly join our ranks once he sees our positions and the spontaneous outpouring of support that is sure to greet them. After all, how could he resist hitting reply to an email sent out to a massive BCC list? We at SURRENDER NOW! object to Mike's proposal because it will delay our goal of making our beloved Imposed Terms a legally binding contract. If we only SURRENDER NOW! that goal will be achieved instantly. We agree that Mike's process is well-timed to sow confusion and mischief, and to undermine whatever progress may be taking place in the now daily bargaining sessions. But that admirable goal might give the Administration confidence in their delaying tactics and in Faculty disunity, which could actually lead to a strike. Like Mike, we are quite happy to have a strike, as long as it fails. Such an outcome would achieve our primary objective of breaking the Union. But we worry about Mike's strategy of maximizing the chances of a strike by giving the Administration a false sense of security about the size and PR savvy of its faculty fifth column. Mike may have underestimated the chances that a strike still might be averted with a negotiated settlement, in which case we would continue to be represented by an actual Union, and would be unfairly burdened with a somewhat fair contract. More dangerously, Mike seems to have forgotten that the strike he is trying to ensure might succeed, which could lead to the doubly horrific outcomes of a fair contract and an even stronger Union. While we at Surrender Now! agree that no amount of damage to SIUCs reputation should be spared in our quest for complete subjection to our overlords, we simply wish to point out the most direct path to that glorious end.
