Historical Development of Database Technology1- Early Database Applications:
The Hierarchical and NetworkModels were introduced in mid 1960’s and dominated during theseventies. A bulk of the worldwide database processing stilloccurs using these models.

Relational Model based Systems:
The model that wasoriginally introduced in 1970 by
Edgar Codd
,
was heavilyresearched and experimented with in IBM and the universities.
3-Object-Oriented Applications:
OODBMS were introduced inlate 1980’s and early 1990’s to cater to the need of complexdata processing in CAD (Computer Aid Design) and otherapplications. Their use has not taken off much.

Mini-world:
Some part of the real world about which data isstored in a database. For example, student grades and transcriptsat a university.
Database Management System (DBMS):
A software package/system to facilitate the creation and maintenance of acomputerized database.
Database System:
The DBMS software together with the data
