Unit: Identity (Week 3, 5 Weeks)


Stage 1: Desired Results

Standards & Benchmarks NETS: Educational Technology (2007), NETS: All Grades, NETS.S: The Next Generation 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats c. develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures. d. contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: a.plan strategies to guide inquiry. b.locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. d.process data and report results. 4. Brief Summary (IB:Include TOK/Int'l Connections) A look at who you are and the different things you are interested in through technology. This unit starts with an examination of copyright and Creative Commons licensing. The students will use Creative Commons images in Photoshop and edit images to create a personal collage. Students will add a Creative Commons license to the content they create and examine grade level trends and in a blog post publish their findings. Understandings You can express aspects of your identity using a variety of media resources and tools. Content you create is copyrighted and you can license content so that it is more easily accessed by others. Essential Questions How can I express who am I? What defines my identity? What makes me unique from the people around me? How can I use Creative Commons to license any content I create? How can I use the content created by others?

Knowledge Students will know you can express who you are using a variety of different media. Students will know that graphics can be saved in a variety of formats. Students will know that a variety of graphic formats have been created in the digital world to meet a variety of needs. Students will know that there are a number of different licenses that can be applied to copyrighted content. Students will understand that ethical use of graphics requires knowledge of copyright.

Skills Students will be able to distinguish between jpg, gif, png filetypes. Students will be able to use the appropriate graphic type in an appropriate situation. Students will be able find and use copyright friendly graphics. Students will be able to attribute and cite graphic sources. Students will be able to apply a Creative Commons license Students will be able to reflect on and showcase their work on a blog.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks & Assessments Collaborative Research and Script Writing Other Evidence: Group Projects Student will collaborate on the creation of a cartoon script dealing with copyright and CC. Creative Commons Blog Post Other Evidence: On Line Postings Student will write a blog post that examines the grade level choice of creative commons licensing and compares that choice to their own. Face project Projects Graphic representation of a student. See sample animoto video. Other Evidence: On Line Postings Reflective blog post on how the face graphic was created and why it represents the student.
