Outline of the Lecture
 Defining Motion
Types of Motion
Quantities that Describe Motion
○ Speed and Velocity
○ Acceleration
Defining Motion
 Position refers to the location of an
object
Cartesian coordinates (x,y)
 Motion is the continuous change in
position with reference to a fixed point
Types of Motions
 Linear
 Circular
 Rotational
 Vibrational
Quantities that Describe
Motion
 Speed and Velocity
Scalar Quantity – Magnitude
○ Ex: 55 mi/h
Vector Quantity – Magnitude and Direction
○ Ex: 90 km/h north
 Average Speed
Distance
 InstantaneousSpeed
 Average Velocity
Displacement
 Instantaneous Velocity
Acceleration
 Acceleration is defined as the time rate
of change of velocity
 You can change the velocity of an object
in three ways:
Increase its magnitude
Decrease its magnitude
Change the direction of the velocity vector
