Outline of the Lecture
Defining Motion
Types of Motion
Quantities that Describe Motion
○ Speed and Velocity
○ Acceleration
Defining Motion
Position refers to the location of an
object
Cartesian coordinates (x,y)
Motion is the continuous change in
position with reference to a fixed point
Types of Motions
Linear
Circular
Rotational
Vibrational
Quantities that Describe
Motion
Speed and Velocity
Scalar Quantity – Magnitude
○ Ex: 55 mi/h
Vector Quantity – Magnitude and Direction
○ Ex: 90 km/h north
Average Speed
Distance
InstantaneousSpeed
Average Velocity
Displacement
Instantaneous Velocity
Acceleration
Acceleration is defined as the time rate
of change of velocity
You can change the velocity of an object
in three ways:
Increase its magnitude
Decrease its magnitude
Change the direction of the velocity vector
