Bersih rally undemocratic, says Muhyiddin

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

Muhyiddin said the rally was akin to the few forcing their ways upon the many. file pic
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today said the planned July 9 Bersih rally
did not reflect the values of democracy, adding that it will have a negative impact on the country and
hamper economic development. 'The Bersih rally is not supported by the whole rakyat but only a few.
Also there will those that will try to use the rally for their own political interests,` said the deputy
prime minister.
'Are they saying that the Election Commission is not fair? [If] so, are they also saying that the seats
that Pakatan Rakyat won are not legitimate? 'I urge them to think this [through] carefully and
consider what impact their actions will have to the society,` he told reporters here. Muhyiddin also
reiterated that that the rally is illegal as the organisers have yet to receive permission from the police.
'It (Bersih) is an illegal gathering and is against the law,` he added. Bersih is an election watchdog
group that is pushing for electoral reforms to provide for free and fair elections in Malaysia.
Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties and activists are gearing up to march next month in the second such
rally by Bersih, the first being in 2007 when up to 50,000 were reported to have gathered in the
capital, with many being dispersed by water cannons and tear gas fired by the police. PAS has
promised to bring 300,000 protestors this year in hopes that it will galvanise support for the
opposition in the general election expected within the year. The 2007 rally was said to play a big role
in bringing record gains for the opposition electoral pact in Election 2008, where it swept five state
governments and won 82 parliamentary seats. Perkasa, together with 36 NGOSs, have also said that
they will organise a counter-Bersih rally on the same day.

Summary
The first current issue that choose is in Malaysia which is about Bersih 2.0 Rally. The
Bersih 2.0 rally also called as Walk for Democracy was a demonstration in Kuala Lumpur
held on 9 July 2011 as a follow-up to the 2007 Bersih rally. The rally, organized by the
Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih), was supported by Pakatan Rakyat (the
opposition), the coalition of the three largest opposition parties in Malaysia, but was deemed
illegal by the government. Bersih, chaired by former president of the Bar Council Ambiga
Sreenevasan, were pushing the Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) to ensure free and
fair elections in Malaysia.
The police guarantee to stop any rallies from taking place on the planned date on the
grounds that all public gatherings without police permits are illegal. Having originally planned
to march through the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Dataran Merdeka. Bersih
decided to hold its rally at Merdeka Stadium after consultations with the Yang di-Pertuan
Agong, Malaysia's head of state.
Estimates of the turnout ranged between 10,000 to over 20,000. The protestors were unable
to congregate at Merdeka Stadium as many were forced to disperse by police who were
heavily deployed throughout the city. Police arrested more than 1600 protestors, including
Ambiga and several opposition figures.
Supporters of Bersih claim that demands for electoral reform made during the 2007
demonstration fell on deaf ears. UMNO Youth and Perkasa planned counter-rallies,
dismissing Bersih's demands for electoral reform, but Perkasa called off its counter-rally due
to its inability to secure a venue and permit. There are Bersih's calls are summarized in the
following 8 demands. 1) clean the electoral roll, 2) reform postal ballot, 3) Use of indelible
ink, 4) Minimum 21 days campaign period, 5) Free and fair access to media, 6) Strengthen
public institutions, 7) Stop corruption, 8) Stop dirty politics.

Pheu Thais likely nominee for premier Yingluck Shinawatra, outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit
Jeffafiva and Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban were among 12 MPs-elect endorsed by
the Election Commission Tuesday.
Pheu Thais No.1 list candidate Yingluck Shinawatra smiles as she
greets reporters at her partys head office hours before the Election
Commission endorsed her poll victory. APICHART JINAKUL.

Core leaders of the red shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) have not yet
been endorsed. The other nine MPs certified by the EC are Chinnicha Wongsawat, Ongart
Watcharapong, Boonkaew Somwong, Trinuch Thienthong, Saranwut Sarankate, Thanusak Lekuthai,
Sutthichai Charoonnate (all Pheu Thai) and Winai Phattharaprasit and Thanin Jaisamut from
Chartthaipattana. EC secretary-general Sutthipol Thaweechaikarn said the EC dismissed all the
allegations against Mr Abhisit, the Democrat Partys acting leader, and Ms Yingluck, the Pheu Thai
Partys top list candidate-elect. Mr Abhisit faced three complaints - trying to lure votes when he
approved a "Blue Flag" trade fair in Samut Prakan on June 26, the advance voting day, ordering
television stations to broadcast the election campaigns of the three mafor parties on July 1, including
his Democrat Party, and unlawfully using the Royal Pla:a in his election campaign. Ms Yingluck
faced a complaint that she allowed certain banned politicians to assist her in the election campaign.
According to Mr Sutthipol, the allegations against both were not considered a breach of the election
law.

Outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Jeffafiva emerges from chairing a
security meeting at Government House. He was among the second batch
of 12 MPs-elect endorsed by the Election Commission yesterday. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD
He said the EC did not consider complaints against the other winners because the reports were not
complete. The agency is expected to consider the remaining complaints tomorrow. With the second
batch of endorsed MPs, the House of Representatives currently has 370 MPs and is still short by 105
for it to convene its first meeting. Early in the day, red shirts and yellow shirts were close to clashing
while they were rallying outside the EC office on Chaeng Watthana Road. The red shirts demanded
the EC endorse Ms Yinglucks poll victory while the yellow shirts asked the agency to withhold all
approvals. Tensions rose when Somboon Thongburan, a core yellow shirt member, addressed the
crowd. His speech drew feers from red shirt supporters. About 50 police who were deployed on
security intervened, but it led to a brief exchange of heated words between senior police and yellow
shirts. Calm returned when one of the red shirt leaders Shinawat Haboonpad asked supporters to
disperse. Democrat candidate Taenkhun Jit-issara yesterday threatened to file a lawsuit against the
EC if it endorsed the poll victory of his rival and MP-elect Karun Hosakul. Mr Taenkhun said he had
asked the EC to investigate Mr Karun for trying to undermine political support for him through
slandering him but there had been no progress.
Mr Taenkhun said he had already filed a civil lawsuit against Mr Karun demanding 5 million baht in
compensation. Meanwhile, a number of MPs may be rushing to meet deposed premier Thaksin
Shinawatra to discuss the allocation of cabinet seats this weekend. It is reported that Thaksin, who
celebrates his 62nd birthday on July 26, will not be receiving any guests at that time. Thaksin
reportedly has plans to spend time with his family and close friends on the Indonesian island of Bali
during his birthday celebrations. It is widely expected that lobbying for cabinet posts will intensify
now that the EC has continued to endorse the status of MPs.

Summary :
The Election Commission (EC) of Thailand approved Yingluck Shinawatra as a Member of
Parliament and giving way for her to be the country's first ladies as prime minister after the
opposition leadership to win big in the election, July 3. EC gives 'green light' to the sister of
the exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, to occupy seats in Parliament after
rejecting a number of allegations that she violated election. Decision would alleviate anxiety
becomes unstable political situation in the near future after his supporters threatened to do
no objection to any decision not to confirm Yingluck. Puea Thai Party won the seat 265 of
the 500 parliamentary seats in recent polls. The EC also approved the winning Prime
Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to be back, the defeated Democratic leaders, on charges of vote-
buying, enabling it to play the role of the opposition. Some opponents Yingluck complaints to
the EC by accusing her of violating election law by allowing politicians banned, including
Thaksin and former prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, play a role in the campaign. As
evidence, refer Yingluck's party slogans, the 'Thaksin think Puea Thai acts.
A total of 475 policy makers need to be approved to enable Parliament to convene its first
session before the August 2, as the Constitution provided. Once the chambers of Speaker
elected from policy makers, one session will be held to select a prime minister, who almost
certainly is Yingluck, 44, charismatic former businessman with a politic career that was just
eight weeks. The delay of two weeks to confirm it sparked threats by pro-Thaksin movement
leaders' Reds' who is asking supporters' charge their batteries "if victory Yingluck not been
verified. They play a key role in the success Puea Thai and remain suspicious of the power
elite against Thaksin, who said they may block party from forming the government. Many
analysts believe the size of the Puea Thai victory made it impossible in the near term but
expect Thaksin opposition in Parliament and military elites trying to undermine the new
government. Yingluck still face pressure to explain how and when the party will implement
the policy of the people who say the private economy can increase inflation and public debt

Summary :
An ironic twist of fate, after an ndonesian member of parliament helped to pass one of the
strictest anti-porn laws in the nation, a photographer captured an image of
him watching pornography on a mobile device.
Arifinto, who oversees a parliamentary commission dealing with transportation,
telecommunications and rural development, was an outspoken supporter of the anti-porn
law. He was caught watching the video clip for several minutes as fellow legislators debated
plans to build a new parliament building. This news is entirely amusing for whatever reason,
public individuals such as politicians pass laws that they themselves seem to disregard.
Obviously this isn't a new practice, nor is it geographical considering the bizarre
circumstances that have encompassed American politics as of late. While this is not saying
that liberal parties don't have their own issues, it's interesting that many of the politicians
caught in scandals just happen to have some conservative ties.Personally, think every
bored politician around the world should just follow the example of Taiwanese politics:
instead of getting yourself into trouble by watching porn or embezzling, just get into a brawl;
not only would you end up with your constituents cheering for you due to your "take no
prisoners policies, but you could put it on Pay-Per-View and totally decrease the national
debt. We can see the politics in ndonesia, ndonesia is consist with majority from Muslim but
they have a problem with pornography. Even though they have a lot of NGOs and
government itself against the pornography, but the pornography and porno film has been
spread free and easy.

The Iirst article that I choose is about the Bersih 2.0 which happened in Malaysia on 9 July 2011. This
rally is Iollow-up Irom Bersih 2007 which they wanted to have a clean and eIIicient eletion by S!#.
In this rally we can see that the several s that support government and opposition. For instance
!erkasa, and !atriot. This rally give impacts to our country when most road in Kuala Lumpur closed
and F#& (Federal #eserve &nit) come with their squad. Furthermore come out with the issues that, a
people name Baharuddin Ahmad was died during Bersih demonstration because oI police brutality.
Bersih was established and lead by Ambiga Sreenevasan and they wanted 8 assertion. It`s all about
election and Election Commission Malaysia. This rally becomes crucial and around the world
especially in South East Asia have a bad perception on Malaysia as an autocratic country. This prove
when !rime Minister oI &nited Kingdom, David Cameron also asked about Bersih rally when our
!rime Minister, ajib Tun #azak visit his country recently. This rally aIIect the ASEA because,
some investor Irom ASEA countrys see Malaysia like Middle East when their people try to ruling
the current leader and government. The investors aIraid the political environment in Malaysia
becomes unstable.
Second article that I choose is, Thailand have Iirst ladies as !rime Minister which won by Yingluck
Shinawatra. AIter six prime ministers in six years oI political turmoil and sometimes bloody, but they
have chosen women as the seventh prime minister oI Yingluck Shinawatra, a businessman aged 44
years oI the new political venture two months ago, ready Ior a new job as prime minister on stunning
election victory party !uea Thai (Thai), which is the de Iacto leader oI his brother, Iormer !rime
Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is now a reIugee. Her biodata is Yingluck is the youngest oI nine
children to Lert Shinawatra and Yindee Shinawatra (daughter oI !rincess Jantip (a Chiangmai)
#aminkwong). She holds a bachelor's degree Irom the Faculty oI !olitical Science and !ublic
Administration, &niversity oI Chiang Maipada in 1988 and earned a master's degree in !ublic
Administration (Management InIormation Systems) Irom Kentucky State &niversity, &SA, in 1991.
Yingluck, called !ou (crab), a nickname given her parents, she had never run Ior oIIice or holding
public oIIice, so much to do to prove its ability to run the country. Some people Iind the taste oI Thai
in this is a great means to step aside doubts about against women and provide beneIits Ior its
representatives in government that can represent them in Iighting the government. Yingluck may not
give impacts to the ASEA countries when she holds the top position in Thailand`s government.
!eople may suspicious with her because she is Thaksin`s sister and she does not have any political
background.
Thirdly is about the issue in Indonesia. !arliament member Irom !arty Keadilan Sejahtera (!KS),
AriIinto was caught and more embarrassing Ior the people oI Indonesia, AriIinto is one person
responsible Ior approving the law anti pornography in Indonesia since 2008. !eople thus calling him
hypocrites and want him to be punished under the same laws. When look at the string oI cases
involving the dissemination oI pornographic content in Indonesia, the eIIectiveness oI the law anti
pornography seems limp and loose, especially without restriction oI media channel as a whole
pornographic content.
For the long term social problems such as prostitution, abortion, sex out oI wedlock and so rampant in
Indonesia, it was like leIt alone without any action by the party responsible. !oint characterized by the
appearance oI obscene publications in Indonesia is seen as the eIIect oI the Iall oI Iormer !resident
Suharto in 1999 aIter one aIter the other magazines that sell the stories and pictures sexual in nature in
Indonesia just that. However, the emergence oI the magazines that did not result in signiIicant
controversy in a country with more than 80 percent Muslim population. It aIIected the ASEA
members because we can see that the quality oI representative in Indonesia seems bad.

MALAYSIA AKAN MEMASUKI TEKNOLOGI 4G
SEPENUHNYA TAHUN DEPAN - RAIS

#ais berkata demikian ketika diminta mengulas mengenai sistem internet jalur

Summary:
-Article above can be summarize that Malaysian telecommunication company had
join venture with the Korean and Russia to bring the new broadband 4G technology
and LTE. With this new technology, television broadcast also can be stream through
handphones that have 4G services. This new technology also make life easier for
the customers because it performance is more way faster than the previous one.
Plus nternet services in Malaysia also will expand more widely and efficiently with
this new 4G broadband services and gives new dimension to all nternet users in
Malaysia. n 4G systems, the circuit-switched infrastructure is abandoned, and only
a packet-switched network is provided, while 2.5G and 3G systems require both
packet-switched and circuit-switched network nodes, i.e. two infrastructures in
parallel. This means that in 4G, traditional voice calls are replaced by P telephony.
The increased bandwidth and higher data transmission rates will allow 4G users the
ability to utilize high definition video and the video conferencing features of mobile
devices attached to a 4G network. The 4G wireless system is expected to provide a
comprehensive P solution where multimedia applications and services can be
delivered to the user on an 'Anytime, Anywhere' basis with a satisfactory high data
rate, premium quality and high security.

USE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY CRUCIAL TO
TRANSFORM RURAL SECTOR

BELAGA, Jan 11 (Bernama)-- The adoption of modern
technology is crucial for
the long-term transformation of the rural sector to increase
productivity of
farm activities and entreprises.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Seri Dr
Maximus Ongkili,
said up till now, 185 parliamentary and state constituencies
had benefited from
the ministry's TAPMOSTI@Community Programme, for which
RM20.5 million has been
approved.
"The programme, which involves an allocation capped at
RM150,000 for each
constituency, is to assist communities find new sources of
income and improve
their livelihood," he said at the launch of the Gaharu Project
jointly
undertaken by the ministry's Nuclear Agency Malaysia and
the Asap Koyan
Development Community (AKDC) at Uma Badeng in Sg Asap-
Koyan, Belaga here.
The community project was made possible under the
ministry's other community
initiative, the Community Innovation Fund, to assist rural and
urban people in
developing innovative projects and upgrading production,
processes or services.
Belaga, a district in Kapit Division, comprises communities
from various
ethnic groups such as the Kenyah, Kayan, Punan, Kajang and
Tanjung.
Within the plan to develop the Bakun Dam, the areas that
contain a myriad of
biodiversity and sources of levelihood from the forest will be
inundated with
water.
The total area of 695 sq km will be filled with water at the
depth of 228m
above sea-level.
He said to ensure sustainable livelihood for the
communities as a result of
the Bakun dam's project, the utilisation of Karas trees to
produce gaharu has
become a focused activity due to the high price and demand
for the forest
product.
"The main output of the project is to utilise and extract an
estimated
20,000 Karas trees that can produce gaharu resin within
Bakun area before the
site is filled up by water by 2013," he said.
Ongkili said the project, which involved high-valued trees
already growing
wild in this area, would bring economic prosperity to the
communities here who
were affected by the building of the dam.
"The project's success will set a good example for other
rural communities,"
he said, adding that other high-value crops and farm
entrerprises, such as
stevia cultivation and swiftlet farming, which involved the use
of modern
technology and were lucrative income activities for
communities, should also be
considered.
In June 2010, AKDC was given a RM300,000 grant by the
ministry to start
phase one of the project, which involved inoculation of the
Karas trees to
produce resin via a process of mutation.
Nuclear Malaysia will transfer technology for the
production of gaharu resin
through unique inoculation techniques. -- BERNAMA

-Articles above stated that The Bakun hydroelectric dam project in Sarawak will be ready for
electricity distribution by the end of 2011, deputy secretary-general of Energy, Green
Technology and Water Ministry. This project will open the new energy technology all over
Asean country because this project is the first Hydro Electric project in Asean. Bakun dam
has eight massive turbines which could produce 2,400 megawatts once it is fully operational
next year. The purpose for the dam was to meet growing demand for electricity. However,
most of this demand said to lie in peninsular and not east Malaysia, where the dam is
located. Even in Peninsular Malaysia, however, there is an over-supply of electricity, with
Tenaga Nasional Berhad being locked into unfavourable purchasing agreements with
ndependent Power Producers. The original idea was to have 30% of the generated capacity
consumed in East Malaysia and the rest sent to Peninsular Malaysia. This plan envisioned
730 km of overhead HVDC transmission lines in East Malaysia, 670 km of undersea HVDC
cable and 300 km of HVDC transmission line in Peninsular Malaysia.

Industry !rogramme IIice, is able to treat 1.2 million litres oI water a day,
about halI the size oI an lympic-sized swimming pool.

!W Technologies said this is the Iirst time their technology is being used in a
pilot Iacility outside the etherlands.

#aw water will be drawn into the ceramic membrane plant Irom the Kranji and
!andan reservoirs in the western catchment areas, which includes the Tengeh,
!oyan, Murai and Sarimbun reservoirs.

For the Iirst three months, water treated using ceramic membrane technology
will be mixed back into raw water. AIter that, iI the quality oI the treated water
meets the !&B's requirements, the treated water will be used.

!W Technologies said it believes ceramic technology is suitable Ior
Singapore.

Apart Irom being cheaper, these membranes are in a single vessel which makes
such treatment plants more compact, the company said.
summary:

-This article shows that ceramic membrane devices include ceramic membrane devices,
ceramic ultra filtration membrane equipments, and ceramic composite membrane device, the
series devices are very successful industrial applications. This series of devices can replace
conventional clarification and filtration, sterile filtration and separation and some enrichment
process, which different from the capacity of small-scale ceramic membrane, and the
ceramic membrane devices are mainly used in industrialized production and specifications
can be opted on consumers demand. High anti-pollution ability, the separation process
produces no secondary dissolution of material, product quality is guaranteed. Ceramic
membrane tube was made under high temperature through a special process, therefore, will
not swell under high temperature or acid or alkali system. So that means this new
technology can help Asean country to save more water usage and it also reduces water
rates for the consumers using ceramic membrane technologies.

-This articles show that how important to keep our coral reef in good shapes and from being
any danger of extinction because they are under treat from ocean acidification , climate
change (and this summer's nasty heatwave), overfishing, coastal development, and more.
are important for ocean health and human communities that live nearby. Coral reefs are
home to 25 percent of the animals and plants that live in the ocean. They provide feeding
grounds, nursery areas, living space, and places to hide from predators for an enormous
assortment of fish and invertebrates like grouper and lobster. For humans, corals provide
food and jobs, with more than 500 million people dependent on reefs for their primary source
of protein. n places like the Caribbean, a key component of the economy is tourism, which
depends heavily on healthy coral reef communities. Coral reefs also provide coastal
protection by buffering wave energy and are also a source of countless medicines that are
improving and saving lives every day.

for human rights and the rule of law is a policy," he said.
"The video clips presented before the (Commission on Human Rights) speak for themselves
and clearly establish the culpability of those involved," Cru: said.
The victims, whose number he did not specify, were on a special counter-insurgency course
south of Manila at the time the video was apparently made last year, and have since foined
the police ranks, he added.
The video appears to show the victims being forced to eat fistfuls of red-hot chillies by men
who are presumably their trainers, Marissa Cru:, spokeswoman for the rights commission
told AFP.
It also showed the victims being ordered to remove their pants and have chillies rubbed over
their genitals, causing them to shout and cry in pain, said the rights office spokeswoman.
"Its very disturbing," she added.
The commission said it alerted the police after receiving the footage, but did not know who
filmed it.
If found guilty in a court trial, the eight officers could also be failed for up to six months
according to a 2009 anti-torture law.
The case is the second against the armed services made public this week.

ord 'no longer an insult in the West'
Benson Ang , The ew !aper , Wed Aug 3 2011

Is the word now used to convey a sense of deep emotion and not an insult?
HAS the F-word become mainstream?
Child psychologist Brian Yeo certainly doesnt think so.
The father of two teenage sons told The New Paper over the phone yesterday. "Its certainly
not acceptable in such a formal setting as there are academics, parents and children present.
"Its still a word to be used among friends or in a social setting."
While accepting Miss Trinetta Chongs explanation and apology, he said the use of the word
would be more acceptable in a smaller college or one with a liberal bent.
He acknowledged that young people here are using expletives more liberally as they take
after their Western counterparts.
"There, the word f*** is used to convey a sense of deep emotion," he explained. "Its no
longer considered an insult.
"Its like the phrase wicked. It used to mean something is immoral or villainous but now it
means something is exciting."
Other words accepted as mainstream in the West are "bitch" and "shit", he said. But they are
still not entirely acceptable here.
Dr Yeo said. "I still dont think our society is ready to accept it."
But poet and creative writing teacher Ng Yi-sheng, 30, feels that society is loosening up,
which is a good thing.
He told TNP. "I have a 12-year-old niece, and you should see the things she says on Twitter.
"There are things people find acceptable now which they wouldnt have about 20 years ago.
"This is good because it means there are fewer limits to expression and thought."
On Miss Chongs speech, he said. "Im only sorry she apologised. A valedictorian should use
honest, powerful words to express herself."
Most parents The New Paper spoke to disagreed.
Dr Jim Teo, a father of two, aged two and four, said. "She should reflect on her words
because using such language is unacceptable."
The 49-year-old physician felt Miss Chongs use of the word was "crude and reflects badly"
on her.
Ao 70850.9
He said it showed that she did not respect the people in the audience.
Dr Teo also did not buy her explanation, saying. "Im sure she could have controlled her
impulses because the speech was pre-written and in front of her.
"So she couldnt have fust blurted out those words like that. Using that word when playing
games is fine but not in a formal setting."
In what appears to be a generation gap, young people we spoke to seemed more tolerant
about the use of the word on such an occasion.
Student Norbel Yang, 24, said. "Using such words is acceptable in this society.
"If we cant accept small things like this, we will not be able to accept the larger differences
among people."

Ban turtle eggs trade in Malaysia: WW
KUALA LUMPUR - CONSERJATIONISTS on Wednesday urged Malaysia to impose a
national ban on the trade and consumption of turtle eggs to ensure the survival of the marine
creatures.
Turtles once arrived in their thousands to lay eggs on Malaysian beaches but are now
increasingly rare due to poaching and coastal development.
WWF-Malaysia continues its call for a comprehensive ban on the consumption and trade of
turtle eggs of all marine turtle species to ensure the survival of these mafestic creatures,
Environmental group WWF-Malaysia said in statement.
With no national ban on eating turtle eggs, they are sold openly in eastern Terengganu state
where only the sale of leatherback turtle eggs is not permitted, the group said.
Turtle eggs are are also available elsewhere in the country.
WWF said contrary to popular belief most people consider the eggs a delicacy and eat them
for pleasure, not as a source of protein or for their reputed medicinal or aphrodisiac effects.

%ajikistan -ans youth from mosques

Wednesday, Aug 03, 2011
DUSHANBE, Tafikistan - Tafikistan on Wednesday banned all children and teenagers from
worshipping in mosques as the volatile Central Asian republic pressed ahead with its battle
against rising Islamic fundamentalism.
President Emomali Rakhmon signed the measure into law after it was unanimously adopted
by the upper house of parliament last month, local news reports said.
The law bans those under the age of 18 from praying in churches or mosques and requires
them to study in secular schools, A:iya-Plus news agency said.
The authorities said the change would help stem the spread of religious fundamentalism in
the overwhelmingly Muslim but secular nation. But the bills passage was strongly
condemned by religious groups.
"The ban to attend mosques will give rise to the negative reaction among the people,"
prominent Muslim theologian and former deputy prime minister Akbar Turad:hon:oda said
in an open letter to the president.
Other religious leaders noted that Rakhmon signed the law in the beginning of the holy
month of Ramadan - a period of fasting and prayer for Muslims.
The president also approved separate changes to the criminal code that make "active
participation" in an unauthorised rally into an offence punishable by up to five years in
prison. Those found guilty of providing "illegal religious education" to young people can now
be put behind bars for up to 12 years.
The impoverished ex-Soviet state shares a 1,340-kilometre (840-mile) border with
Afghanistan and has previously accused religious groups of stoking unrest in a bid to impose
Islamic rule.Rakhmon last year recalled Tafik students studying abroad after accusing
foreign institutions of taking steps to "prepare terrorists".

By 2020, sian men ill find it hard to get a ife

The Star/Asia ews etwork
Wednesday, Aug 03, 2011
An estimated 160 million female foetuses have been aborted over many decades due to the
mistaken perception that the male is superior to the female, reported China Press.
It said that this trend was especially severe in China and India, where the ratio of the male
and female population was seriously unbalanced.
"It is estimated that by 2020, it will be very difficult for hundreds of thousands of Asian men
to get a wife," it said.
American author Mara Hvistendahl said in her new book Unnatural Selection that many
Asian parents only wanted male babies because of the belief and also due to the "one child"
policy in China.
According to Hvistendahl, the same could be said of Indian parents.
The daily said if nature was allowed to take its course, the ratio of male and female
population should be 105 male to 100 female.
"However, the male population in many developing countries has far exceeded this ratio. In
China, the ratio is 120 male to 100 female, India (108.100) and Armenia (120.100)," it said.

ne dead as tropical storm hits Vietnam (ENV#NMEN%

AFP Sunday, Jul 31, 2011
HANOI - Tropical Storm Nock-ten, which left more than 50 people dead as it swept through
the Philippines, killed one person when it hit northern Jietnam, an official said on Sunday.
The storm arrived late Saturday in the provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, where 40,000
people had been evacuated in advance, but one man was killed when electric poles were
pulled down in the bad weather.
"A 68-year-old man died by electrocution in the Anh Son district of Nghe An province," said
an official at the national flood and storm control committee.
The storms consequences were described as "not considerable" by Nguyen Xuan Hung, head
of the office dealing with natural disasters in Nghe An, after Nock-ten arrived weaker than it
had been in the Philippines.
Jietnams flood and storm season, which can last until late October, claims hundreds of lives
every year and causes huge material losses.
At least 22 people were killed during heavy rain and storms in the north in June, officials
said, including 12 who were struck by lightning while working in rice fields.
The toll in the Philippines from Nock-ten, named after a Laotian bird, rose to 52 dead and 27
missing as more reports came in from storm-hit provinces in the archipelago, officials there
said Sunday.
Most of those killed were said to be drowned or buried in landslides, while virtually all of the
missing were fishermen who vanished at sea when the storm hit from Tuesday to Thursday.
