THE SOCIAL BASIS OF THETHIRD UNIVERSAL THEORYThe social, i.e. national, factor is thedriving force of human history. Thesocial bond which binds together eachhuman group, from the family throughthe tribe to the nation, is the basis forthe movement of history.Heroes in history are persons whohave made sacrifices for causes. Butfor what causes? They have madesacrifices for others. But whichothers? They are those who have arelationship with them. The relation-ship between an individual and a groupis a social relationship, i.e. the re-lationship between the members of anation. For nations are founded onnationalism. Those causes, therefore,are national causes and national re-lationship is the social relationship.The social relationship is derived fromsociety, i.e. the relationship betweenthe members of a society, just asnationalism is derived from the nation,i.e. the relationship between the mem-bers of a nation. The social relation-ship is, accordingly, the national re-lationship and the national relationshipis the social relationship. For the groupis a nation and the nation is a groupeven if they differ in number, leavingaside the extended definition of thegroup which means the provisionalgroup regardless of the national rela-tions of its members.
