2011
This report outlines the findings of the Economist IntelligenceUnit’s in-depth analysis of the microfinance businessenvironment in 55 countries. The index that underlies this report allows countries and regions to be compared across two broadcategories:
Regulatory Framework and Practices
, which examinesregulatory and market-entry conditions, and
Supporting Institutional Framework
, which assesses business practices andclient interaction. The
Microscope
was originally developed forcountries in the Latin American and Caribbean region in 2007and was expanded into a global study in 2009. Most of theresearch for this report, which included surveys, interviews anddesk analysis, was conducted in the first half of 2011. This year’s
Microscope
builds on last year’s study, but significantly improvesit by utilising a new methodology, increasing the number of interviews conducted per country, and featuring financial performance data to provide context for each country’s scores. This work was supported by financing from the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-AmericanDevelopment Bank Group (IDB); CAF (Latin AmericanDevelopment Bank); and the Netherlands Technical AssistanceTrust Fund at IFC.The complete index, as well as detailed country analysis, canbe viewed on these websites:www.eiu.com/microscope2011LACdata.fomin.orgwww.caf.com/microfinanzaswww.ifc.org/microfinance
