Q: Why do you write in the genre(s) that you’ve chosen?A:
Besides being very knowledgeable in history, I was always fascinated with the WWII era, eventhough Rebirth picks up just after WWII ended in 1945. I always advise writers to write about thingsyou are already experienced with. Then your story will have more power and debth.
Q: What has been your most rewarding experience while in the writing process?A:
I’ve learned incredible things about prophecy and how they’ve come true and how the human spiritcan prevail through extreme difficulty. Writing about Holocaust survivors who experienced the ultimatelow and then built a mighty superpower in the Middle East within three years of WWII’s end wasmiraculous.
Being able to encourage others that things can work out for the good for those who trust inthe Lord has also been very rewarding.
Q: What has been your most negative experience while in the writing process?A:
Mega, mega hours past what I planned, went into completing Rebirth, but it was worth it afterhearing some rave reviews when it was finished. It can be daunting at times when you’re working withan editor who has edited over 450 books. She had many great insights about sentence structure, but itwas up to me to keep what was integral to the plot, and slightly change what needed smoothening. Aneditor doesn’t change the story, but they give the manuscript a fresh perspective that an author can reallyuse to tighten up the writing and make it flow better.
Q: What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey?
A:
It’s been a lifelong goal and I did it! I’ve been writing since 1978, but this was my first novel. I alsofell in love with writing fiction that was based on actual events in ways I cannot describe. It took threeyears of intense research (because I’m a stickler for authenticity) and writing, and then five months of intensive editing to complete Rebirth. (That reminds me to thank my wife again for several lonely nightsand weekends.) But even that was not enough for me. So I found a living eyewitness who participated inthe actual events that created the most controversial nation in history. Being able to email her questions Ihad was incredible.
Q: What has been your most negative experience in your publishing journey?A:
Although I’m a multimedia producer working with video and graphics, I’ve never designed a book cover until Rebirth. I’m very particular about quality and the printing/design aspects were challenging, but I finally got it right and it looks amazing. The picture doesn’t do it justice, compared to the actualbook when it’s in your hands. I also spent over 200 hours producing the book video trailer and did thenarration myself.
It was
difficult to break away from writing, but I needed to produce the media aspectsof Rebirth because I had very specific ideas of joining the visuals with the story.
Q: What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors?A:
It’s all about a great story. It starts there and ends there. There are lots of distractions in completing anovel, but a good author must remain focused on what’s best for the story.
Q: Who is your favorite author and why?A:
I really like John Grisham. I like edge of the seat stories and you can tell his stories are well thoughtout.
