ike Hedge is a man whohas learned that timingis everything. As aphotographer who shoots hissubjects mid-air in the act of  jumping, he has become themaster of freezing the imageat just the right moment. “Thetrick with jump shots is to catchthe person at the height of their jump,” he says.Hedge’s photographicpassion is an outgrowth of hisinterest in Parkour, the athleticpursuit of leaping around urban settings and overcoming obstaclesin near-superhuman fashion. “My passion for taking photos of people jumping was inspired by my passion for jumping over things backin the mid-’90s when I did lots of ‘freestyle walking,’” he explains. But when he saw the results, amassing a collection of jumpingphotos became an obsession. “I realized that when people are inthe air, for one split second, they are totally free,” he says now.“When I photographpeople jumping, I feelI am capturing thetrue
them.
CRITERIA
U
All photos must be taken bythe same person.
U

CoREy:
Hedge’sinspiration was
Life
magazine photographerPhilippe Halsman’s famous “jumpology”pictures from the 1950s, in which he captureddozens of celebrities—Marilyn Monroe,Richard Nixon, Groucho Marx—in mid-air.Hedge visited Halsman’s family in New Yorkand photographed his daughter Irene.A jump shot, naturally.
Tip for Beating This Record
“Human beings are almost incapable of launching at the same time,” says Hedge.“That’s why group jumps can be a disaster. The trick is to make everyonecount down together ratherthan jump at your command.People have different reactiontimes, but let them count forthemselves, and they will leaplike clockwork.”

hile growing his entry or the 2009World Beard and MoustacheChampionships, George Gaspar waslooking or ways to “play with it as itsprouted.” Beard-based activities are otenhard to come by, but ater glimpsing a videoclip eaturing a man flling his whiskerswith toothpicks, he knew his own impressivegrowth had ound its true calling. The recordattempt began well. As Gaspar remembers,“The frst thousand went in fne, and thesecond thousand went in okay, but then aswe started to add more they would pushsome out.” Ater hitting 2,222, Gaspar calledit a day, aced the bathroom mirror, and sawwhat he had become:a human toothpickdispenser or horsd’oeuvres hour.
