Estilo de documentacin MLA (Modern Language Association of America) A continuacin se presentan algunas normas prcticas basadas en Gibaldi, Joseph. The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. New York: The Modern Language Association of America, 2003 (Valencia Community College). Cmo incluir las referencias en el cuerpo del texto 1. Las referencias: aparecen en el cuerpo del texto; al pie de la pgina, slo si son comentadas; deben contener los datos necesarios a fin de ubicar la fuente en la bibliografa final.

2. Si la fuente es una sola obra de un mismo autor, hay dos posibilidades a) Eco dice "no hay semitica" (143). b) Algunos autores dicen que ya no hay semitica (Eco 143).

3. Pero, si las fuentes son ms de una obra de un mismo autor, igualmente, hay dos posibilidades a) Eco dice "no hay semitica (Trattato 143). b) Algunos autores dicen que ya no hay semitica (Eco Trattato 143).

4. De los ejemplos anteriores se concluye que en el cuerpo del texto: se utiliza slo el apellido del autor; se escribe slo el primer sustantivo o la palabra ms evocadora ( NORMAS) que permita ubicar la obra en la bibliografa;

 se escribe el nmero que seala la pgina.

5. Cmo se escribe la referencia en el texto: siempre entre parntesis, despus de la cita o de la mencin; despus del punto, si ste es punto y aparte; en todos los otros casos, despus de las comillas y antes de la puntuacin siguiente (NORMAS).

6. Si la fuente es o un libro o una revista, va en itlicas sin comillas; o si es un artculo, va entre comillas 7. En las referencias, el nombre del autor precede al apellido ("Macedonio Fernndez", no "Fernndez, Macedonio"). 8. En la bibliografa final o Fuentes citadas (por razones de orden alfabtico) el apellido del autor antecede al nombre.

Las Citas 1. La cita es un objeto de estudio, generalmente, acompaado por comentarios. 2. Debe reproducir exactamente el original. 3. Extensin del texto citado Si es inferior a tres lneas, forma parte del prrafo que lo comenta; se escribe entre comillas, no en itlicas. Si supera las tres lneas, va en prrafo aparte; en formato cita (sin comillas ni itlicas); con letra inferior a la del texto normal y se ampla el margen izquierdo ( 2 cm ). 4. Cuando el original del texto citado est en una lengua diferente a la del artculo: se puede citar una traduccin en el cuerpo del texto y el original, en nota al pie de pgina. 5. En el caso de un poema citado , la relacin se invierte:

 el original va en el cuerpo del texto y la traduccin, en nota al pie de pgina.

La Bibliografa final 1. La bibliografa final recibe el nombre de: Fuentes Citadas, cuando incluye las fuentes que se consultaron y que forman parte de la investigacin documental (Montemayor, Garca y Garza 56); Fuentes Consultadas, cuando contiene una lista amplia de referencia sobre el tema (Montemayor et al). 2. Puntuacin Entre el apellido y el nombre: coma (Prez, Florin). Entre la ciudad y la editorial: dos puntos (Barcelona: Emec). Entre la editorial y la fecha: coma (Emec, 1989). Los campos van separados por puntos. Ejemplo: Prez, Florin. Recuerdos del Oriente . Barcelona: Emec, 1989. 3. Revistas: no se pone editorial ni ciudad; s, eventualmente, el volumen y el nmero; la fecha de publicacin va entre parntesis. 4. En el caso de varios autores, slo en el primer autor el apellido precede al nombre. Ejemplo: Borges, Jorge Luis, Adolfo Bioy Casares (y no: Bioy Casares, Adolfo). 5. El documento sin autor sigue el orden alfabtico de acuerdo con su ttulo.
