The Summary of Grammar-Translation Method

The Purpose of Grammar-Translation Method The Grammar-Translation Method was called the Classical Method and it has been used by language teachers for many years.

This Method has some purposes: Helping students read and appreciate foreign language literature. Students would become more familiar with the grammar of the target language and this familiarity would help them speak and write their target language better. Students would help to grow intellectually.

The Goals of Grammar-Translation method The students are to be able to read literature written in target language The students know about the grammar rules and vocabulary of the target language Provide the students with good mental exercises which helps develop their minds.

The Way of Teaching Grammar-Translation Method A.Translation of a Literary Passage The students translate a reading passage from the target language into their native language.This way will help them to understand the meaning. Step 1 :Each student is called on to read a few lines from the passage Step 2 :They are asked to translate into their native language the few lines they have just read Step 3 :The teacher helps them with new vocabulary items by giving them the opportunity for asking if they have some difficult vocabularies.

B.Reading Comprehension Questions The students answer the questions in the target language based on their understanding of the reading passage.

Step 1 :The teacher asks to write the answer to the comprehension questions which appear at the end of the text in English.Then after one-half hour, Step 2 :The teacher asks the students to stop and check their work.One by one,each student reads a question and reads his/her response.If it's correct,the teacher calls on another student to read the next question.If the answer is incorrect,the teacher selects a different student to supply the correct answer,or the teacher himself/herself gives the right answer.

C.Antonyms/Synonyms Step 1 :The teacher asks the students to give the opposite/similarity of the words given Step 2 :The teacher asks the students to find out the opposite/similarity in the text.

D.Cognates The students are taught to recognize cognates by learning the spelling or sound patterns that correspond between the languages.Students are also asked to memorize words that look like cognates but have different meaning.

E.Deductive Application Rule Grammar rules are presented with examples. Step 1 :The teacher explains the grammar rules by giving examples Step 2 :The teacher asks each student to make some sentences using the grammar rules.

F.Fill-in-the-blanks Step 1 :The teacher gives a series of sentences with words missing Step 2 :The students fill in the blanks with new vocabulary items/items of a particular grammar type.

G.Memorization Step 1 :The students are given lists of target language vocabulary words and their native language equivalents

Step 2 :The teacher asks them to memorize the words and also required to memorize grammatical rules.

H.Use Words in Sentences The students make up sentences in which they use the new words so that they understand the meaning.

I.Composition The teacher gives a topic to write about in the target language.The topic is based on some aspect of reading passage of the lesson.
