Novel Culture: Meaning, Markets, and Social Practice
Abstract: The sociological analysis of mediated cultural objects typically orients toward one of three socio-cultural phenomena: 1) artistic creation, 2) institutional production, or 3) cultural reception. This project, relying on empirical data garnered through social network analysis, participant-observational fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and traditional statistical modeling, traces a literary novel from its creation, through its
production, promotion, and release and into communities of readers across the United States. This “full
-
circuit” study of the creation, production, and reception of culture re
-attaches previously disparate sites foranalysis into an interdependent system, highlighting both the incubation processes in which a novel is formed, turned into a saleable commodity, and made sense of by readers in local communities, and the processes of metamorphosis in which key agents, through the deployment of social, cultural, and economic ties and theuse of secondary texts (i.e. texts
about
the text), cross institutional divides between creation, production, andreception. The analysis is grounded through the case-study of
 Jarrettsville
, a work of historical fictionconcerned with the racial and regional tensions in a border town immediately following the Civil War.
