What is Hadoop
Hadoop is a distributed computing platform written inJava. It incorporates features similar to those of theGoogle File System and of MapReduce to process vastamounts of data
Current release is 0.17.1
“Hadoop is a Free Java software framework that supports dataintensive distributed applications running on large clusters of commodity computers. It enables applications to easily scaleout to thousands of nodes and petabytes of data” (Wikipedia)
What platform does Hadoop run on?
Java 1.5.x or higher, preferably from Sun
Linux; Windows for development; Solaris, but not documented
Hadoop is Especially Useful
Scalable: Hadoop can reliably store and processpetabytes.
Economical: It distributes the data and processing acrossclusters of commonly available computers. Theseclusters can number into the thousands of nodes.
Efficient: By distributing the data, Hadoop can process itin parallel on the nodes where the data is located. Thismakes it extremely rapid.
Reliable: Hadoop automatically maintains multiple copiesof data and automatically redeploys computing tasksbased on failures.
