Before his death, the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) performed the Farewell Hajj1, and while he was there, the Saying of the Truth2, be ever gloried His Majesty and Might, descended (which means): “This day I have perfected for

you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam
as religion.” [Al-Mâ’idah, 5: 3] Upon hearing this glorious Ayah, Abu Bakr Al-Siddîq3
(may Allah be pleased with him) wept. When people asked him about the reason
behind his tears, he said: “This is the death announcement of the Messenger of Allah
(may Allah bless him and grant him peace).”

Then, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) returned from the Farewell Hajj, and nine days before his death, the last Ayah in the Noble Qur’an was revealed (saying what means): “And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah.

Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated
unjustly.” [Al-Baqarah, 2: 281]
1 Farewell Hajj: The first and the last Pilgrimage performed by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace.
2 The Truth :Al- Haqq: one of the Beautiful Names of Allah.
3 Al-Siddîq: Surname of Abu Bakr, meaning the Trustful.

LAST MOMENTS
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) started to suffer the
pain of his fatal illness.
Thereupon he said: “I want to visit the martyrs of Uhud4.”
He went to the martyrs of Uhud, and stood before the graves of the martyrs, and said:
“O Martyrs of Uhud! Peace be upon you, you are the preceding ones, and by the Will
of Allah, we shall join you, and I, by the Will of Allah, shall join you.”
On his way back from Uhud the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
cried so His Companions asked, “Why do you cry, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:“I

miss my brothers,” The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, are not we your brothers.” He said: “No, you are my Companions, but my brothers are people who would come after me, they would believe in me though have not seen me.”

Three days before his death, pain started to become severer.
During such period the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
was being nursed in the house of his wife Maymunah.
Thus he said: “Gather my wives.” And the wives assembled.
The noble Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) asked their leave saying
to them: “Would you allow me to be nursed in ‘Aishah’s house.” They answered: “W e
allow you, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came out, supported by two
men, ‘Abbas bin Abdul-Mutalib and ‘Ali binِAbu Talib, with his feet dragging on the
ground.
Sadly, it was the first time for the Companions to see their Prophet (may Allah bless
him and grant him peace) supported.
4 The Battle of Uhud: 3 A.H./625 A.D.

The other Companions gathered, solicitously asking, “What is wrong with the
Messenger of Allah, what is wrong with the Messenger of Allah?” Then people started
to crowd in the Masjid, which was completely filled with the Companions.
There in the room of Lady ‘Aishah, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and
grant him peace) started to sweat heavily. Seeing this Lady ‘Aishah said: “Truly, in my
life I have never seen anyone sweat that excessively.”
Then she grasped the hand of the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him

peace) and started to wipe the sweat with his hands.
But why would she wipe the sweat with his hands, and not hers.
Lady ‘Aishah said: “Because his hand is more blessed than mine.”

Lady ‘Aishah heard the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
repeating: “There is no god but Allah! Verily, Death has its agonies. There is no god
but Allah! Verily, Death has its agonies.”
Pain grew so much severe that the trace of the poisoned (roasted) sheep offered to him
as a gift by a Jewess at Khaibar appeared. It was so sore that he said to ‘Aishah,"O
'Aishah! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaibar, and at this time, I feel
as if my aorta is being cut from that poison."
When clamor started to heighten (meaning noise from inside the Masjid), the
Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) asked: “What is this?”
Lady ‘Aishah replied:“O Messenger of Allah, people are worried about you.”

Thereupon he said: “Carry me to them.” He wanted to rise but he could not. So he ordered them to pour seven skins full of water on him to be relieved so that he might give some advice to people.
