The McKinsey Global Institute
The McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), established in 1990, is McKinsey &Company’s business and economics research arm.MGI’s mission is to help leaders in the commercial, public, and social sectorsdevelop a deeper understanding o the evolution o the global economy and toprovide a act base that contributes to decision making on critical managementand policy issues.MGI research combines two disciplines: economics and management.Economists oten have limited access to the practical problems acingsenior managers, while senior managers oten lack the time and incentiveto look beyond their own industry to the larger issues o the global economy.By integrating these perspectives, MGI is able to gain insights into themicroeconomic underpinnings o the long-term macroeconomic trendsaecting business strategy and policy making. For nearly two decades, MGIhas utilized this “micro-to-macro” approach in research covering more than 20countries and 30 industry sectors.MGI’s current research agenda ocuses on three broad areas: productivity, competitiveness, and growth; the evolution o global inancial markets; and theeconomic impact o technology. Recent research has examined a programo reorm to bolster growth and renewal in Europe and the United Statesthrough accelerated productivity growth; Arica’s economic potential; debtand deleveraging and the end o cheap capital; the impact o multinationalcompanies on the US economy; technology-enabled business trends;urbanization in India and China; and the competitiveness o sectors andindustrial policy.MGI is led by three McKinsey & Company directors: Richard Dobbs, JamesManyika, and Charles Roxburgh. Susan Lund serves as MGI’s director o research. MGI project teams are led by a group o senior ellows and includeconsultants rom McKinsey’s oices around the world. These teams draw onMcKinsey’s global network o industry and management experts and partners. In addition, MGI works with leading economists, including Nobel laureates, whoact as advisers to MGI projects. The partners o McKinsey & Company und MGI’s research, which is notcommissioned by any business, government, or other institution.Further inormation about MGI and copies o MGI’s published reports can beound at www.mckinsey.com/mgi.
