 Note to the 2011 edition:
Originally this project was undertaken to correct typographical errorsin an RTF version downloaded from theInternet Archive—commonOCR errors such as “U-23s” appearing where “U-235” ought to have been read—in order to create a document with acceptable typesetting. A PDF containing scans of the 1974 edition of the book is freely availableat theCarroll Quigley website, and this was downloaded to cross-check  errors and to establish the layout for this document. A comparison of the two files, however, exposed differences beyond mere scanning orOCR errors. Most obviously, the RTF version begins with a foreword by Michael L. Chadwick not present in the 1974 edition, but the text of theRTF version contains many edits which alter the meaning of theoriginal text; for example, on page 921 (page983of this edition) the1974 edition contains the text “subsequently shown to be false, yet allhis statements”, whereas the RTF version substitutes “subsequently shown to be [true] [and] his statements”. In the interest of preserving fact it was decided that the new document would highlightthe differences between the two editions. This edition of
Tragedy and Hope
restores the text of the 1974 edition.Highlighted words or passages denote text which was altered in theRTF version. The foreword and edits from that version are preserved inthe appendices added in this edition. Some errors may still be present;any mangled sentences, any missing accents or umlauts are the fault of this editor. The layout used approximates the layout of the 1974edition, set to A5 page size and using 11pt Georgia font. Any reader using a good PDF reader can navigate chapters using the bookmarks in this file. A reader using a computer or a touch-screendevice can also navigate by clicking entries in the table of contents, returning to the TOC by clicking “[Contents]” in the header of the odd-numbered pages; the reader can also navigate between Appendix B andthe text by clicking on the daggers († and ‡) in the text and the pagenumbers in Appendix B.
